Hello! My name is Safiya and I am twelve years old. I live in Thebes, Ancient Egypt in the year of 1875 BCE. I was born into a family of peasants, which is the lowest class in the social class. Being a peasant is hard work--- we provide food for the whole village, and young men have to build monuments. I feel guilty for being a peasant. I wish my life was more meaningful than this.

The sky is clear blue today and the village is bustling with people trying to get to places. In the distance I see a blue river and dry green bushes. I am on my way to harvest the crops from our village plantation. It is only thirty minutes away from my home. In 6 days is a festival to honor the pharaoh, so as a peasant, we collect the crops and cook them along with the livestock.

Today is the festival to celebrate Pharoah Hatshepsut. My mom and I are up early to prepare the food. As I chop the leeks and onions, my mom talks to a friend who is also a peasant. They are counting how many cloves of garlic they have harvested.

Five hours later, we arrive to the festival. Everyone in the village has attended.
Loads of food are piled onto shiny decorated plates. As my mouth salivates, I know that we would never be able to eat these glorious dishes.

As the peasants serve fruit for dessert, everyone draws their eyes towards Pharaoh Hatshepsut as she comes out of her main home. Everyone applaudes and cheers fill the village. Priests approach the pharaoh as they start the blessings. It must be nice to be a pharaoh.

Pharaoh Hatshepsut is a female pharaoh--- and females are not supposed to be pharaohs. She is fond of architecture and art, and encourages trade. I do not like Pharaoh Hatshepsut. I do not like that she does not respect and treat all social classes equally. I believe that everyone should be treated equally. I do not like that I am nothing but a piece of dust to everyone.

As a peasant, you do a lot of labor work. I clean and cook from early morning to noon. Then I go to scribe school for a few hours. A peasant's meal is simple. We eat cucumbers, onions, fish, and homemade bread. Kids drank water and adults drank water or beer. Our free time was usually around early evening and lasted about a couple hours. We play lots of games and talk with each other. Sleep time is around late evening.

I See A Government Official... Mid Day of Day 301, 1875 BCE

I walk down to the plantations to harvest some more crops. The sun is hotter than usual and mosquitos swizzle around me. My harvesting bag lays right next to me as I pull the crops out of the ground. I take a break for a second and look around. Suddenly… I see a government official. They are the second highest class in the social class and their lifestyles are to die for. They have the finest homes, are provided the best food, and own the loveliest furniture and clothing. A government official's job is to advise as a supreme ruler. Anyway, as I stare at the official, his head turns towards me, and I immediately go back to picking the crops. He then heads back to the temple and is out of sight.

Right now I am on my way to school, which is fifteen minutes away from my home. I want to be a scribe when I grow up, so I go to scribe school. Scribes are the fourth highest class in the social class. They are record keepers and writers. Mostly students that come from merchant and artisans attend this school. Only a few peasants attend, like me. These schools are run by priests, which are the third highest class in the social class. In scribe school, we learn and memorize over seven hundred hieroglyphs. It is very fascinating. I want to be a scribe when I grow up because I love writing. It helps me express myself and my feelings. When I write, I feel safe, comforted, and happy.

An Evening With Asim The Artisan Evening of Day 314, 1875 BCE

I am taking a walk through the village right now since it is my free time. I stroll past markets, homes, and monuments. I see my good friend Asim, who is an artisan. Artisans just one class above peasants in the social class. As I sit down next to him, I see he is working on a small statue. The carvings are so precise and detailed which amazes me. Artisans make many objects like statues and tombs. Asim has done some engravings in the pharaoh’s temple. He is an expert at engravings. Artisans also use different kinds of stone such as limestone, granite, copper, and bronze. Asim and I talk for a while and eat some bread from the market. What a great evening.
