It appears to be a gothic or a victorian esque building based on the walls and archway. The area that the recording is taking place can be seen in one camera view with only one movement where they zoom more into the archway.

"The Astronomer's Dream" is set in an observatory building, where an astronomer is studying at his desk. The setting of the area changes slightly when the moon comes into view, with a few furniture props missing compared to the previous shot before the astronomer's encounter with the moon in the dream, causing a highly exaggerated and stylistic setting overtime simultaneously. The film has many noticeable cuts from each shot to implement different scenes and moments, with the building of the astronomer even changing from having a balcony with a telescope facing the moon into a wall with a knight statue in front of it for example.

The setting takes place in the astronomer’s house that resembles a medieval castle displaying the many tools that the astronomer uses. The film has two settings with the background being deep in field of depth letting the audience see everything. The way the background is designed looks like a cartoon or drawing and fictional. Overall the film feels like a lucid dream with some aspects of the film being exaggerated.

There is a variety of lighting used in order to elicit different types of emotion during 'The Astronomer's Dream'. Both high contrast and low contrast light is used. The low contrast was utilised when everything was falling apart, intensifying the chaos experienced by the characters. The source of light (back light) was used in the form of the moon, which was seen in the actual film. Front light can also be seen, especially in the close up of the moon when he is getting 'eaten up', in order to produce a clear image.

In 'The Astronomer's Dream,' various lighting effects are employed to evoke distinct emotional responses. There is usage of both low contrast and high contrast lighting. When everything was coming apart, the low contrast was used to intensify the chaos in the scene. The moon, which was visible in the real movie, served as the source of light (back light). To create a clean image, front light is also visible, particularly in the close-up of the moon during his "eating up" process.

The people coming out of the moon are sort of weird as well, and also don’t have a natural acting style, but seem more like they’re playing some character. The movements are also much larger as it is a silent film without any title cards to show words, so the entire story must be shown through acting instead of told with dialogue.

“The Astronomer’s Dream” (1898) takes place in a medieval inspired observatory. The setting has a telescope and other interesting tools, showing the astronomer’s scientific nature. The director, Georges Méliès, adds a fanciful feel, turning the observatory into a place of wonder. Despite the early film era’s limitations, the setting captures the imaginative and creative spirit of Méliès’ storytelling and visual effects.

As a movie in black and white, the lighting may seem more harsher than it would be intended -- with the monochrome colors emphasizing the black/darkness in shadows and whites in areas meant to be brighter. Additionally, the lighting in each different scene and event occurring within the movie changes throughout. For example, between the initial scene where the astronomer is studying at his desk and when he encounters the moon, the lighting changes to be slightly darker when the moon is present. However, in other scenes such as the girl sitting on the crescent moon and the balcony of the building turning into a wall with a knight's statue in front, the lighting may be brighter to emphasize the brightness/'glow' of the moon or the details of the wall and armor lighting of the knight's statue. The lighting changes similarly back to how it originally was when the astronomer's dream ends, leaving him back in his desk as if nothing had happened.

In this location, the astronomer engages in his work and experiences a dream that takes him on a fanciful journey to the moon. The scenes transition from the realistic setting of the observatory to the imaginative landscapes of the lunar environment, showcasing Méliès' pioneering use of special effects and visual storytelling in early cinema.

In Georges Méliès' film "The Astronomer's Dream," the costumes and makeup reflect the theatrical and fantastical nature of early cinema. The characters, particularly the astronomer, are often dressed in attire reminiscent of the late 19th century, reflecting the film's production in 1898. The costumes are stylized, with attention to detail in fabrics and accessories.

As for makeup, it was relatively basic by today's standards, but Méliès did use makeup to enhance the characters' features, especially when portraying whimsical and otherworldly figures on the moon. This often included exaggerated facial expressions, painted features, and distinctive looks for the fantastical beings encountered during the dream sequence. The makeup and costumes contribute to the overall theatrical and imaginative quality of the film, showcasing Méliès' innovative approach to visual storytelling.

The costumes match the setting of a fantasy story; the astronomer is portrayed using wizard-like garments, the caped woman is adorned in stars, and the woman on the moon uses greek-inspired clothes. The only one not using dramatic clothing is the man in all black. This may be representative of their roles in the story.

In "The Astronomer's Dream," Georges Méliès employed natural lighting in the observatory scenes for a realistic feel. During the dream sequence on the moon, he used artificial front lighting to illuminate characters and the lunar landscape, and some backlight to showcase the brightness of the moon, enhancing the fantastical atmosphere. The creative use of lighting accentuates the contrast between the ordinary observatory and the dreamlike lunar setting.

The color elements of the film are mostly white and black, but that could be because of the technology of film production at the time. It shows a nice blend of both colors though. The lighting shifts as the film progresses through different panels, where it is noticeable that the lighting shifts when the moon disappears from the building.

The movements of the character expresses character and emotion. Such as the wizard when he is in shock or the kids playing around. It makes sense for the film to do this because at the time, the film production industry had no such technology to record audio during filming. "It shows a great deal of style and effort along with touches of elegance, it reminds me of the show I played in once." -Sol Jin
