Emily's father was exceedingly protective, turning away all her suitors, "We remembered all the young men her father had driven away, and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her, as people will" (pg 31). As her suitors were chased away, no one was available for her to form a romantic or any intimate relationships (as a teen/young adult), with that in mind, she had no one else to "cling" to but her father.

Even more so when she falls in love with Homer, someone not from her social class, while the feelings she has for him is denied by her family and status,"At first we were glad that Miss Emily would have an interest, because the ladies all said, “Of course a Grierson would not think seriously of a Northerner, a day laborer.” But there were still others, older people, who said that even grief could not cause a real lady to forget noblesse oblige—without calling it noblesse oblige" (pg 32 ). "She will persuade him yet," because Homer himself had remarked – he liked men, and it was known that he drank with the younger men in the Elks' Club – that he was not a marrying man" (pg 32 ). Knowing Homer was not an aristocrat, southerner, nor "the marrying man" she could not fathom losing another male figure in her life. If this would occur, she would once again feel alone and alienated.
