In the 1960 the rate of homeownership was 62% . This is due to the increased financial security the nation had following WW2 . The desire to move past the poverty that the generation's parents had to endure during the Great Depression was also an important factor.

Johnson's Great Society 1964

Johnson's Great Society was a failed attempt to bring about equality and prosperity to the Country. Funding for the Great Society was quickly diminished by the war in Vietnam, leaving Johnson's program behind. However the creation of Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security cut the number of people living in poverty in half.
