Discusion Points (DP - 01) - Please write comments for this discussion using the code DP - 01

Hi Guys,

Craig that was awesome. A great assignment buddy. I like your approach of describing the activities done in the Pink bin facility. Nicely done.

I appreciate your method of using a minimalistic approach of depicting the supply chain. However, this time, we need to add more details to it.

I have summarised the marking criteria in the succeeding paragraphs. Please go through it. Guys, let us put our head together and try to comprehend what needs to be done. Some points have been strikethrough by me as I am not clear about them. If you guys know about it please put up your comments in a separate box (do not write comments in other's notes, use individual notes and please use the code on top). If no one has got any idea about this we need to ask Jeannine or Steve to clarify the issue.

1. Supply chain

Key perspectives

Phases

Implications on production, delivery, <del>in-service sustainment.(keep the design sustained. once your business in up and running how do you sustain your operation. Long-term sustainability, not green, but working smoothly and smartly)</del>

2. Desing the operational facility

Principles of supply chain integration

<del>Human Factors Integration (probably ergonomics) anything that relates humans wth the facility and also about artificial intelligence and communication. and you replace or improve human factors.</del>

Systems safety

Impact of the principles chosen by us, on the design process.

3. Design

How it affects operational objectives

Fiscal Risks

4. Logistics implication of the facility design.

These are the issues that we need to address in our assignment. Hence I do not think it will be enough to give a barebone structure of the supply chain.

Craig, please add more description key activities to your supply chain, please also mention the decoupling points in it. We can go through it on 07 September 2016 and arrive at a decision on the depth of the supply chain, that needs to be used for this assignment. We are asking a lot from you, but we will make it up to you in other activities.

I am personally going with Craig's suggestion of using Pink Bin supply chain. If any of our team members have any different ideas. Please post it in their comments.

Hi Team Hakuna Matata, please find a brief outline of Pink Bins below in the form of attachments. They consist of:
- My previous assignment from RIM class, handed in last week. This will give you an idea of what we do and a brief description of our supply chain. Please note the supply chain displayed in the assignment is very simplistic, but its what I was going for as that's how I roll ;).
- I have also attached a previous assignment from Applied Management, which was put together a couple of years ago. Its a bit unrelated, however it does give you a reasonably good background of the company.

I do not mind at all which Company/Organisation we go with for the assignment, however I do think we need to decide on one that is easy to gather information from. I also think we need to decide quickly, perhaps on Wednesday. So anyone with a Company in mind, post it up and lets decide.

Cheers guys (and Gal) and I look forward to working with all of you.

Craig.

P.S - have I put the attachments in the correct area?

Hi Everybody,

I think that Craig has made clear to us the basic value chain of Pink Bins. Since, the suppliers of raw materials and the customers are basically the same, I think we need to consider if there is any differentiation among the customers. That is, if the customers are segregated and if so based on which criterions. During our team meeting we need to come us with a detailed supply chain diagram for the activities involved.

Secondly, I think that the suppliers of power, internet, banking etc., would be part of our external supply chain and that we need to decide on the points which link them to us.
I think thats what we should do.

We need to use some research in regards to relate them with the established methods or something else could come up with our discussion.

I think PinkBin is using a HYBRID SUPPLY CHAIN STRATEGY.

Great to see you are making progress on Padlet.
And also great to see that Mandeep is now contributing as well.

Please start uploading content for the individual sections.
You've got the company, some ideas and the template, but not really a lot of content yet for the assignment.

For the design of a supply chain you would consider these perspectives:
- Type of supply chain (are you aiming to be lean or agile)
- Type of product (is it innovative of functional)
- IT (programmes and technology) to be used across your supply chain
- proximity to customers or suppliers (so, yes your number 2 on suppliers is good!)
- any of the 7 principles of supply chain would be perspectives you consider

You then need to discuss how these will impact on the running business. E.g. proximity of customers and suppliers will impact on the running transport costs for your business... these impacts are the implications for the production, delivery and in-service sustainment.

For the design of the operational facility, go back to the textbook on OPS Management, Part Two of the textbook outlines all the topics you need to consider when designing operations. You then need to look at these topics from this new perspective of human factors and supply chain integration.
E.g.
To ensure Quality Management for an integrated supply chain, you need to define quality standards and measure that will be implemented across all organisations involved in the supply chain.
Or, if you make layout decisions, you will need to consider the human factors. If the shelves are too high, people won't be able to reach... etc.

I can provide you with more support and suggestions if you have specific questions. But you need to start drafting something for the individual sections.

Hello all,
As per the suggestion from Jeanine; I would like to link it with our assignment-
1) Agile would be a great option for Craig's supply chain as it eliminates- a) unwanted waste b) Build Quality In c) Create Knowledge; d) Defer Commitment e) deliver fast f) Respect People g) Optimize the whole.

2) Type of Product- We will be more FUNCTIONAL than INNOVATIVE

3) IT- we can use smartsheet and cloud system which would efficiently disseminate the communication loss between managers and staffs as well with customers.

What do you guys think?

By SHINE MANAYIL: Hi Hasan,

1. How would we show that the supply chain should be agile? We need to substantiate our decision. Let us first start with a supply chain diagram to see the various elements involved in it. I would request you and Craig to make one.

2. Our decision in last class was to design a new facility for the recycling plan. It will certainly involve some elements of innovativeness as we are trying to improve the functionality of the facility. Again we will need to substantiate our decision. Or out opinion needs to explain how we reached the conclusion.

3. How about in addition to bringing in new software, we include better training to the workforce.

4. We also need to come to a consensus on the principles of supply chain that would form the perspectives of our supply chain.

@Shine and Rakibul re lean and agile
http://blog.procurify.com/2014/04/22/agile-lean-supply-chain-management/

The above blog describes the major differences between a lean and agile supply chain. It describes the major difference that high volume and low variability is lean supply chain management. For Pink Bins supply chain I would assume it is lean due to the fact that our waste streams are consistently high, and we aim to reduce waste as much as possible in order to reduce costs.

Hi team, I just spent the last hour or so putting this automated system together for Q3 on FlexSim. It is really basic but gets the point through I think. General flow is from incoming waste through hopper, up conveyor to vibrator then around to sorting table. From this design we can touch base on:

Human Factors:
-such as the height of the sorting table compared to the staff, each is different and may need variance in working stations etc.

Comments by Shine: How does the staff pass on the materials collected by them? How fast does the conveyer belt move? Will the labourers be able to collect all the material in one cycle of the conveyor or does it require multiple cycles? Are we going to segregate the workers, some to collect wood, others paper, others plastic and so on? What will be the layout of the conveyor in the recycling plant including the position of workers?

Good questions man - Answers below:
How does the staff pass on the materials collected by them? The staff working from the conveyor are normally on a raised platform, and would have a chute or two next to them which they drop the recovered waste down into. The bottom of the chute would either be a simple concrete bay, which can be emptied with a front end loader. Alternatively, the recovered waste could drop into a steel bin, which can then be moved and tipped elsewhere with a forklift.

How fast does the conveyer belt move? I am not sure exactly what speed, but it would have to be at a slow enough pace for safety reasons, and fast enough to keep up with the previous stages of the automation.

Will the labourers be able to collect all the material in one cycle of the conveyor or does it require multiple cycles? This depends on the incoming material, however its probably best to run the waste through twice if time allows for it.

Are we going to segregate the workers, some to collect wood, others paper, others plastic and so on? Yes, depending on what we wish to recycle - each person would have a chute either side of them, so if we have 3 each side of the conveyor there would be 8 chutes. The two on either end of the staff would be for lower volume waste, such as non-ferrous metals (copper, aluminium etc) and plasterboard. The middle ones which can be accessed by staff either side would be high volume, such as wood and hardfill (concrete/brick etc).

What will be the layout of the conveyor in the recycling plant including the position of workers? Similar to the design on this Padlet, which I will update shortly to have the reducer/shredder.

- Staff may get bored sorting all day, so multi-skilling may be an option for staff morale etc.

Safety systems:
- An automated system like this must have a number of safety switches/mechanisms in place for Health and safety. These may include "kill switches" that enable a staff member to instantly shut down the entire system. Also may include barrier arms blocking moving equipment etc.

Comments By Shine: What about Large pieces of debris. What about like in the video shown by you can have your stuff cut into manageable pieces, an electric magnet area t collect metal and other such facilities in the facility. Yes, we can load waste into a reducer/shredder to make the handling a lot easier. You can also get magnetised belts for recovering steel.

Fiscal risks may include the fact that this type of equipment is a huge capital cost - a thorough cost-benefit analysis must take place to consider whether the additional volume (compared to current) of product extracted is cost beneficial to the Company. Is there enough waste in the area and from customers to make this facility feasible?

Hey brother, looks good. Just need to have a check over spelling - e.g slide 1 - my name is spelt Craig haha...slide 6 Segmentation, also watch out for words spelt in US grammar, such as ORGANISATION - we use an S instead of a Z with most words. Cheers mate, good work.

Someone needs to tell me what I am talking about so I do not look like an idiot haha.
