Jim goes alone to a house where him and Will used to pick fruit but has now changed to a place where people have no shame and are in ecstasy because Will doesn't want to go because he doesn't understand why the people are doing what they do, Jim's enthrallment with it, and feels a bit shunned by Jim's behavior of seeing him as a stranger when it comes to the house (called the Theater by Jim). Afterwards, Jim comes back to Will walking home and they come cross a flyer for the carnival coming to town to Jim's curiosity and interest and Will's skepticism, and Jim asks Will if he is mad at him for leaving him to go to the theater to Will's denial. Will goes home to see his mother and father, and realizes that his dad also has the carnival flyer but seems nerved by it it. Will stays in his room despite wanting to stay downstairs, and hears his father burn the flyer and leave the house though his mother is asleep, unknowing. At Jim's house, Jim has a conversation with his mother of not wanting to have anythings that can have the potential to hurt him, but his mother saying that he is going to have to experience pain to grow in his life. Jim also contemplates taking the lightning rod of his room going against his cautious and observant personality just to change things up and watch the consequences of his decision.

I really love this section of this book because we get more insight into Jim's character than ever before, making me believe the author will have some in depth character development later on for him. The way how the author writes Jim and his mom's conversation is very descriptive, letting the reader paint a picture in their heads of what's going on and Jim's perspective and his mother's defense. I also think the writer is continuing to write Will's and his dad's strained and strange relationship very well, keeping me interested and in suspense with it being out of the ordinary and established before the book begins. I am also glad the lightning rod salesman has made another appearance, since the author has done such a great job establishing characters making me anxious for the plot to kick in instead of more dialogue heavy chapters.

Miss Foley blames Jim and Will from robbing from her despite her knowing different as she is on her 'nephew' 's side and reports it to the police and Mr. Halloway. Mr. Halloway believes that they are not guilty, though Jim and Will act like they are to avoid a bigger mess. Mr. Halloway and Will strengthen their bond by them both coming to understand the other, and then the Dust Witch marks a slime trail on Jim's roof which Jim and Will clean off. These chapters end with Will confronting the Dust Witch, snatching her hand, and watching her sink to the ground from the air with a hot air balloon while he climbs down from a tree safely. I enjoyed reading these chapters as I'm relieved to see Will and his father's relationship finally going on a good path, am interested to see more of Jim and Will's newfound dynamic with broken trust, and am glad Will is getting time to shine and show the audience how quick-witted he is with his confrontation of the Witch, which also was a great insight to how his character works, perceives things, and motivation for things.

This shows that even though the experience of going on the carousel was now revealed to Miss Foley after her desiring it for so long, the end result of her becoming a scared child was the opposite of what she wanted, taking away all her experience, making her crazy. Therefore, she would then see it as a vanishing-forever land now because it stripped away her sanity.

Will's dad meets Mr. Dark and the Dust Witch and sends them off away from Will and Jim's hiding place by lying. He also realizes the truth of Will and Jim's situation of hiding from the carnival people, still trusts them, and tells them to stop by the library at seven where he'll hopefully have a plan for their next course of action. The Dwarf tells Mr. Dark Will and Jim's hiding place under the sidewalk's grille by Mr. Tetley's cigar shop, and he rushes over there only to find them gone. I enjoyed this section of the book because Will's dad is growing more and more developed almost every chapter now, and its satisfying to watch him and Will's relationship progress because of this. I also liked reading this section of the book because of the high tensions when Will's dad lies to Mr. Dark and meets the Dust Witch, which caused me to have delightful suspense.

Will realizes that young Miss Foley told the 'freaks' him and Jim's names because she was vulnerable as she is a child and crying, and because she was utterly desperate for any shred of hope to make herself old again on the carousel thanks to the 'freaks.' This shows that Will is making quicker realizations of how the 'freaks' use people and can now combat the easier with him knowing their methods of using vulnerable states of people to get what they want.
