Why For My Quote

I choose that quote because I feel it describes what MTSS is. The CA Department of Education has developed this framework called MTSS that they believe in. In other words, this is policy of the CA DoE. The CA DoE is recommending, not enforcing, the policy to the schools in CA. They recommend that the schools adopt this framework and make it their own. The framework is vague enough to allow the schools to make it their own. The idea is that the schools should create a multi-tiered system of support in three domains. These domains are academics, behavior and social-emotional. The domains must be tiered. The idea is that every student starts off in the first tier of academics, behavior and social emotional. Then, as the students need more help with those areas, they move up to the second tier. In the second tier, they receive more support from the school. Every tier higher, the student receives more support. The schools can determine how many tiers to have. The key is that every school gets to make it their own and so you have to see if your school is doing it and how they are doing it. There is a good resource from the CTA I linked.

I feel that this quote is indicative of what every school should strive for to take care of the academic, behavioral and social-emotional needs of every student. MTSS addresses everything that we have learned about so far regarding Culturally Responsive Pedagogy--looking at students holistically and recognizing their funds of knowledge and what cultural assets they bring to the classroom. It ensures that all students have equal access to academic learning through Universal Design for Learning and differentiation strategies. It acknowledges behavioral challenges and provides counseling and mental health support to kids to help with their social and emotional needs. This aligns with the SEC Anchor Competencies Framework regarding restorative justice, trauma informed classrooms, and mindfulness. MTSS also addresses the diagnostic, formative and summative assessments that teachers can use to monitor progress and make adaptations to the curriculum when necessary. It stresses data collection to make team-based decisions about what students need in terms of academic or behavioral intervention, and uses that data to determine the tier of support that is required. Though it is not a requirement that all schools adopt this system, I think it is imperative for school districts to take a close look at how they are taking care of their students and what steps they can take to prepare them for a lifetime of learning and coping with the challenges of the twenty-first century.

I chose this quote from the CDE's description of MTSS on their website because I think it is easy to forget that these systems are designed to help ALL students, not just those with some sort of barrier to learning. While of course it is important that we do our best remove barriers from those students who are struggling, we should be doing our best for all students. If theses systems for support can help all students in their education there is no reason that we should not be implementing these techniques to help all of our students do better.

Synthesis the implications of MTSS

MTSS is a framework created by the CA DoE in an effort to to take care of the academic, behavioral and social-emotional needs of every student. MTSS is a multi-tiered system that can schools that implement in an effort to support all students through an active ranking system of tiers in three different domains. The three domains are academics, behavior and social-emotional. With the students ranked properly and visibly in each domain, they can be serviced more effectively by the school. The system is not so specific that schools and educators don't have the ability to adapt the system for what works best for them at their specific site. Schools have the ability to make MTSS their own by using Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), funds of knowledge and others things of that nature to help create the best MTSS for them. The MTSS is designed to support all students but especially those needing an IEP, 504 plan, other system of supports to remove barriers to learning.
