ENGAGING THROUGH PLAY

In my classroom, I want students to be not only be learning through their minds but through their body. a type of learning which I encourage is play, this can be achieved by student ability to interact with different objects and materials. At such a young age we develop the sense of the world through our body (Exclusions & awakenings: the life of Maxine Greene 2001), such as our feet guiding us in the direction we want to go in. With students being able to engage through play where the students and teacher are able to interact with one another by working together as a team.

The library is there for inquiry-based learning where students and teacher again are able to work together to create questions and ideas, and are able to use the library as a way to guide them to seek what is true. The library is also there to inspire students with their creativity. It is there to challenge themselves with their creativity and ideas. The library is a great way for students to learn in different ways as there are numerous resources for the students to use, such as comics, novels, DVDs and etc.

The Allegory Cave story told by Plato is one that I want to be able to use; as someone who is stubborn and very reserved, I want to be able to incorporate this into my teaching. To be able to see things differently and that I need to get out of my comfort zone. In order to achieve this, I want to make sure to really get out there in order to make my future students feel that they are also comfortable in getting out there and using their voice; whether they disagree with an opinion or to back another up. As not many people in different areas have the option to do so.

My classroom will be filled with many group discussions, it will be based on collaborative thinking and just working as a whole. The discussions will be based on questions that have no right or wrong answers allowing the students to be able to feel more comfortable in sharing their ideas and thoughts. The class will help students to work well with one another. I really love collaborative work and discussions as you are able to receive answer you never really thought of before. Most of the time having group discussions will help students understand the context more, as I am one of these students who learn more when there is collaborative work involved.

Because Australia is a multicultural country the classroom will be filled with students from all sorts of background. I want my classroom to be very accepting of everyone. In order to achieve this, we will celebrate everyone’s ethnicity the proper way without any stereotyping any one’s culture. Diversity will be celebrated and acknowledged. The teacher and students will again work together to make the classroom feel like a safe environment for everyone that steps into the classroom by learning to be very accepting and open minded.

CELEBRATE DIFFERENCES FROM OTHERS

The class will have everyone celebrating the differences they have. Its s important to show that we are very similar to one another, but we are quite different at the same time. Again, by asking questions and having a group discussion will help students to treat each other lovingly but at the same time acknowledge that they are different. By having the students celebrate who they are, their differences and similarities will help the class to be such a safe and comfortable environment, making students want to come in and learn.

The poem tells us that we are atoms, everything we see are made of atoms by acknowledging this we can allow students and teachers to build a relationship with the more-than-human world. As we all are made up of atoms, it could be the relationship with nature, animals, technology, day to day things such as the relationship between human and chair. The class will be filled with such acceptance by learning to have relationships and having a sense of interconnectedness with the more-than-human world as well as one another. Which is blurring the boundaries with one another (Knowledge Explained | Philosophy Tube ft. Animalogic 2016).

As mentioned before with group discussions, students are able to voice their opinions, this will allow us to hear the multiple perspectives of one another. To know that there are more than one answers to what is the right one. By doing this it allows us to get all sorts of answers and are able to unpack each answer as a group this could be done by again asking a question or getting a student to elaborate on their answer. By doing this, students will be more open to the different ideas out there as well as be able to unpack all sorts of things in different situations.

HIERARCHY OF NEEDS

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, I will be able to identify where a student sits and will be able to help them grow as an individual, things such as having access to water and food. As a fellow teacher I would also pay attention to the students needs as well as their safety. But I must first make them feel comfortable enough to tell me as well as maybe ask the parents some questions concerning the child’s health to get an idea on the situation. I really want my classroom to be such a safe environment where students can be open to be by coming and telling me anything they like without feeling scared.
