This is a photo that I'm proud of due to the way I worked with my space, my editing skills, and the elements I was able to capture. I took this picture through the window of my sister's bedroom, which captured not only her indoor plants but the reflection of the outdoor greenery as well. Due to the glare, my original photo captured a lot of dust and dirt which was a timely process to remove. My favorite detail in this piece is the glowing water streaks coming from the water spray bottle.

(#1) Inspirational Artist: Irene Pérez

I came across Irene Pérez's work while working on my Latin American and Latino/a/x Art History Class final project. Pérez is an artist who grew up and lives in Spain, but resided in the US for a small period of time to work on her photography and studio art degrees. Her art pieces reflect on the ideas of mothering, gender stereotypes, identity, home, and belonging. The experiences Pérez encountered with being a mother in Spain has been very large influence to her work as she explained it "took my social 'status' and role as a woman back 50 years." Pérez's goal through her pieces is to contribute to the efforts of creating positive changes for women living in Spain, with her daughter's future being her largest motivator.
Pérez's work is fascinating to me because I think her messages are very important and I really enjoy the way she conveys them. Her use of multiple art medias is very inspiring to me because I like to do several art forms and I would like to experiment with mixing them in the future.

After a bit of moving around I found a layout that I enjoyed and now I am feeling pretty excited with the direction my work is going in.

So far, I have printed my work from photoshop and am adding 3D elements. Cutting out the scissors that I added to my image was challenging, but completing it on Bazzart (a mobile app) was the easiest way to do so. I made my print medium sized with a large black border around the image to convey the largeness of my Grandma's house. I'm really enjoying the way the lace border around my image is looking and it's adding that soft, vintage, comforting feeling that I wanted to evoke in my project. The direction of my piece did come from the questions I answered in post #2, but it was hard for me to narrow down what aspects of my grandma and her house I could include together.

To me, a place means more than just the physical space itself, but the details of what it contains. These details are the objects housed there, the people who remain or go in and out of that space, your significance in that space, and the feelings that space evokes.

My piece is a collage inspired by my grandma’s house, who I always called “Ma.” Ma’s house was a space that was very layered with memories and emotions for me. It is where my mom along her 7 siblings grew up as well as where my cousins, my sisters, and I would go to visit Ma and attend family events. The house had a long driveway, a never-ending hallway, several rooms, and a wide yard with tall trees and lots of wildlife. Inside was filled with collections, childhood games, a pool table, vintage clothing, jewelry, and decorations, family pictures, new and old magazines and newspapers, and smells of delicious food. Ma passed away in 2017, but her house was not sold until the beginning of 2021, and it remained a vacant empty home for a long time. At first, I never wanted to step foot in the house with everything removed from the inside because I did not want my memory of the space to be altered. After some time, I started visiting the home when my mom and aunts would go to clear it out and do repairs. The more I started going the more I was paying attention to how the light would shine through the windows, the color of the carpet and vibrant tile flooring, and how the house felt larger than ever before. Although being in the house made me feel insignificant, the feelings I would have being there were still comforting and homey. Those feelings guided me while creating this piece. Ma’s Housenot only details what it was like for me to be in the empty home, but also my loving memories of Ma with comments on the sublime in relation to her passing.

Overall, I am happy with how my piece came out and I’m proud of myself for overcoming the challenge of arranging multiple ideas together in a way that is visually appealing and got my message across well. I think my idea with a large black border worked, but if I was to recreate this piece I would make it even larger. I enjoy the ways I edited the scanned objects in Photoshop and the colors I incorporated go together well, giving off the soft, ethereal aesthetic I was going for. Including the lace border is probably my favorite detail. I think the attention to and message of my main work with the thick border would’ve been lost without it, and the lace brought a very nice contrast. Going back to this piece in the future, I would want to add elements such as gold flakes to the gold part of my collage to elevate the shininess, which was an idea mentioned by Alex in critique. Also, I would want to use fresher rose petals because the color changed overtime and I think it would be cool to have the petals start from being vibrant and slowly becoming darker.

The video playing on the TVs of the woman playing the man as a violin while wearing TV bras is a concept I have trouble figuring out but it was interesting to contemplate while watching. I would like to know what the concept behind this piece and the video is along with why that video was chosen to play in the TV garden.
Another piece I enjoyed was screenprints on playing cards titled Piano Duet by Joseph Beuys and Paik. Printing on cards and other similar paper objects is something I want to do myself in the future. Also, the printed photos included in the exhibit were really cool and I enjoyed observing them and getting inspired by them.

Once I finalized my idea and started filming, everything slowly came together. Just starting to take shots even if I wasn't sure how they would fit in helped me find the flow and direction of my final project. Ironically, it was difficult for me to find the time to film some portions of my video because almost everything had to be filmed with natural sunlight.
My segments of throwing clothes on my bed was what I was feeling the best about during my process.

Coming out of a very long quarantine where I was living with my family in my suburban hometown to moving back to San Francisco for school, there has been a large change in my sense and use of my time. At home, there was nothing I really could do. I'd see my friends occasionally from a distance, I never had to plan what would be happening in my week, and time management was easy because I could do anything from the comfort of my bed in pjs. Now that I am living in San Francisco again, my time constantly feels spread thin between several different obligations. I have to attend in-person classes every day, my social life has resumed, I finally get to be apart of my sorority off of zoom, now I am living on my own which comes along with a lot of personal responsibilities, and I still have my boyfriend, friends, and family at home that I want to maintain strong relationships with. In my video project, I wanted to capture that sense of spreading my time thin while also showing my daily tasks physically being spread thin.

Overall, I am happy with the way my video turned out. The mental idea I had was translated exactly how I planned it to be and I feel that the message I wanted to display to my audience was clear. My favorite aspect of the video is the segments of throwing items on my bed throughout the day because it's very realistic and I feel that it showed the change of time well. The collecting of all the items also gave my video a good closure, with the one mask still lying on my bed demonstrating the sense that there are still more things to be done with not enough time in the day. In terms of using Premiere, it was a bit of a challenge at first and some aspects of it are still confusing to me, but I was able to edit my video how I intended. There was not too many editing tricks I used, I really only focused on stitching my clips and sound together as well as color corrections. Although I didn't want a lot of crazy editing because I wanted each clip to look and transition consistently, maybe I could've tried to fit in a few more editing tricks just for the purpose of experimenting more with Premiere. I also wish I could've added more clips of people that I am with during my day, so if I was to go back to this project I would include that.

What work stood out to you from this video and why/what made it interesting for you? Please include an image or screenshot from the video of the work.

Syjuco’s work that stood out to me the most was the crochet designer handbags project. I enjoyed that form of commenting on big brand consumerism. In the fashion world we have these few large, very expensive brands where wearing their logo in any way means you are cool and rich, but I have never agreed with that. We put logos on such a high pedestool that people must have the original version even when bootleg or handmade versions look exactly the same.

Syjuco says that 80% of what she makes is crap which she has to produce to get to the 20% that is successful. What did you think of this? Did it surprise you? Do you feel similarly or differently?

Hearing Syjuco say that actually made me feel a lot more at ease with my artistic processes. If an art piece doesn’t work out for me, I’ll beat myself up over it and get really frustrated, wanting to quit. It happened to me this evening, none of my ideas were turning out how I planned them too and it made me have a great loss in motivation to keep going so I left the studio with an unfinished project. The way Syjuco sounded so accepting over the fact that most of her work will not turn out well of the way she imagined is helping me come to terms with that for myself as well.

Syjuco says that the Bay Area can be a wonderful fermenting space becuase of the ways that artists can create communities and spaces for themselves in the Bay Area. Do you envision your work existing the Bay Area? What communities or spaces do you imagine your work being a part of (or are already a part of?)

I agree with Syjuco that the Bay Area has several artist communities and is welcoming of all take up space alongside each other. I do envision my work existing in the Bay Area in the future, but am not too sure exactly what community or space they will be a part of. I hope to explore the answer to that question as I continue my artist journey at SF State and making more connections with artists in the Bay to find the space my artistic ideas belong in.

At this point of the diorama building process, I finished breaking and glueing on the mirror pieces (leaving with only 1 cut:) and felt stuck on what materials to use next after that. I had a bucket of air dry clay, so I smushed it all over the walls to give it a soft, bubbly, cloudy appearance. Although when I got back to my project, the clay cracked when it dried, but I really liked that mistake since it went well with the mirror cracks.

I designed this logo for my art Instagram account/ art career. When I first started brainstorming I wanted to specifically create a logo for crochet, but after some thinking I realized it would be better for me to make it more general since I do several kinds of art forms. In my logo, I wanted to include a personalized aspect of including my last name in the "business" name along with a play on words by adding in vines of ivy. I chose green as the background color to go with the ivy theme, and the font to go with the squiggly vines. My choice of having the logo shape be circular was so that it could easily fit in a social media profile photo.

Dizzy: The several shards of mirror on the bottom of my diorama creates a dizzy feeling due to the disorientation of space and broken up image of reality. Every side you view is project a real, created, or mixed view of a/the sky, making reality unsure. Viewing my diorama in the video form where there is an automatic rotation of the space adds to that as well.

Spacey: Looking at the clouds makes me space out and reflect on anything that comes to my mind. That is the sensation I wanted to evoke from my diorama- a space to look at and just think.

Alone: Due to the reflection and continuous patterns, being in the middle of the space causes a sense of aloneness. I enjoy the act of being on the top of a hill and looking up at the clouds. Whether I’m with just myself or someone else, when I observe the clouds it feels isolating in the best way.

Relaxed: The cool-toned color scheme and minimalistic creations in the diorama, there is a sense of peacefulness. Although this description is very contrasting to my other chosen words, the way you see it depends on your interpretation. I created my diorama in this way with the intent of relaxation and believe it does show that, but I also view it from a more anxious perspective as well since that is the state my brain usually jumps to first in situations.

I don't think this is the best logo for a few reasons. Kumon is a tutoring/learning center for kids, but I don't think it would motivate kids to get excited about learning. When I first came across it, I could not understand why an unhappy face was included. After looking at it more, I realized it was meant to be a thinking or attentative face. Their choice to have the color blue to be the background added to that sad perspective of the logo for me. Although this logo is memorable, it's not appealing to me and without context, I would not assume it's a tutoring center for kids right away. To make this logo more effective, I think they should add/change elements to catch kids eyes. Having a brighter and warm toned color, a happier facial expression, and include a less still font.
