Q1: Sketchbook Growth

This collage shows the progress of my sketches throughout the first quarter. In the beginning, I did easy drawings that I knew how to do, like shapes and clouds. I'm slowly starting to try new things, as you can see in the bottom images. One thing I learned to draw is a tree. I chose it as my SMART goal because I like to use trees as a fill in for the background of many outdoor drawings. Learning how to draw them more realistically will add to my drawings detail and make it look more complete. I applied this Technique to the bottom left drawing.

Q1: Technique Development

The four main techniques taught to me this quarter were line weight, contour, cross contour, and observational drawing. This paper demonstrates all these techniques. All the 3D shapes are observational drawings. Observe the object then draw it. Contour and cross contour are showing shape and dimension. Line weight is using the thickness of the lines to show what is closer and what is farther away.

Q1: Artist Inspiration

I learned from Heather Hansen that there is no limit to expressing yourself. She uses her whole body for her art. We first got a large piece of paper and scribbled with crayons. Then, to practice her way of art, I used my whole body to draw outside with chalk. It was an interesting experience to sit down and draw all around me with no limitations.

Q1: Still Life Composition

We learned that a still life is a composition of still items that we can draw. For the still life, we each had to bring in a meaningful item to draw. I brought a softball because it reminds me of my family and the sport I love to play. There are many skills needed for a good still life, like shading and view finding. I focused mainly on shading. These are my practice sketches that were quickly done.

Still Life

For my still life, I chose to draw a softball because it was the meaningful item I chose to draw. I wanted to put it in the middle for that reason. I drew the other items because they were my classmates items. I wanted the format of the items to be triangular because it is more pleasing to the eye. I learned about view finders and many shading techniques. I also learned to not be harsh with outlines for a less cartoony look. Although my still life is unfinished due to absences, I still learned a lot and thing the finished components look fantastic.

I drew pyramids for my line weight illusion. I learned that the thicker the lines, the closer the object appears to be. I caught on to this technique very quickly and chose to do pyramids for a bit of a challenge. I didn't want to do something too easy but not too hard. Pyramids seemed to be the perfect choice because of the shape and many lines. I am very proud of my project. I think this is such an easy yet game changing technique.

I think quarter 1 has made me excited for the future of this course. It is fun, but I am also learning a lot. These simple techniques introduced and taught to us go a long way and I'm sure moving forward we will build on these. My art skills have improved so much over these past couple of weeks and I can't wait to see what they are like by the end of the year.
