The Bombings Of Dresden

The bombings of Dresden began in February of 1945, coming to end of World War 2. Prior to the bombings, Dresden as a city never had been targeted by Allied Forces, so the city was still unaffected by bombing campaigns. In Dresden, the Nazis had filled the minds of the population about the horrors and crimes that the allied forces had committed while over their advancement of Nazi-occupied Germany, so the citizens of Dresden were filled with fear. The Bombings of Dresden took place from the 13th of February to the 15th. Their was 350,000 citizens in Dresden at the time of the bombings. After the duration of the bombing campaign by allied forces, over 100,000 citizens were killed and nearly all of the city had been burned to the ground and in ruins. After the bombings, many historians questioned whether the bombing was really practical as the war was coming to an end and the loss of civilian life could have been avoided. At the time period, the atomic bomb had not been implemented in war, so the main form of wiping out large areas of enemy targets was through the practice of "area" or "saturation" bombing. The practice of saturation bombing was to cripple the enemy countries economy, break the morale of the German people and force an early surrender. The allies response to the bombing of Dresden stated that the intended purpose was to wipe out communication lines and also munition factories as well as important infrastructure that would fuel the German war machine. At the end of the bombing campaign, Dresden as a city was so badly affected by the result of the bombs, that only a very few of the original buildings were left to stand and the other building were in complete ruins. A handful of historic/important buildings such as the Dresden State Opera House and several fine churches were carefully rebuilt from the remains of the rubble and the rest of the city was slowly rebuilt with plain buildings. Kurt Vonnegut explained the events that he witnessed in Dresden in the book 'Slaughter House 5' stated "It looked a lot like Dayton, Ohio, more open spaces that Dayton has. There must be tons of human bone meal in the ground."

1. Gotz Bergander recalled from his experiences of the bombings "Dresden was completely unprotected. The flak had been withdrawn during the winter".
2. Gotz also recalled from his experience "Everything was quite for awhile, until we heard the bombers and the first explosions".
3. Gotz recalled the first bombs dropping as "It was as if ahuge noisy conveyor belt was rolling over us, a noise punctuated with detonations and tremors".
4. Gotz recalled his first encounter with the civilians of Dresden after the bombings as "People ran towards us totally distraught, smeared with ash and with wet blankets wrapped around their heads".
5. After the first two night attacks, witnesses heard civilians screaming "Everything gone, everything on fire".
6. Victor Gregg, recalled his experiences of the bombing as "Dropping thousands of incendiaries, along with the first bombs. A string would hit the ground in succession - like a drum roll - and the sky changed from a bright white to a dull red that danced before dying".
7. Victor Gregg, recalled having a bomb land near his building "Suddenly, a "Blockbuster" dropped outside our building, blowing in the whole wall. I was thrown nearly 50 feet and covered in brickwork and rubble".
8. Victor Gregg, recalled having left the building after the bombings began to die down "We stumbled along the remains of a wide avenue, flanked by fires and mountains of red-hot wreckage".
Links that i got my quotes from"
1. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/world-history/dresden-bombing-70-years-on-a-survivor-recalls-the-horror-he-witnessed-in-the-german-city-10042770.html
2.
http://germanhistorydocs.ghi-dc.org/sub_document.cfm?document_id=1589
