Deconstruction of Magazine Contents Pages by Layla Cairns

Contents pages allow the viewer to know what is included in the magazine, and what page to find specific things on. For my own magazine, I need to understand what is included on rap/ hip hop genre contents pages and how they are layout.

'Vibe' Magazine

On most magazines, it is stereotypical to place a smaller version of the masthead in the top left hand corner, however 'Vibe' have approached this differently by just using a 'V' to represent the masthead. Many people recognize that this is still associated with 'Vibe' due to the same font being used for both the front cover masthead and the contents pages 'V'. I think I will try and do something different like this in my own magazine, as it looks really different, and 'new'. Especially in the the rap industry, new and contemporary things are seen as 'cool', which is how I want my magazine portrayed. The purpose of displaying the masthead again is to remind the readers what they are looking at, and I think it helps keep a theme throughout.

The title of the page 'Contents' is broken down into three sections, which again adds to the contemporary feel. The colour sticks to the house theme, and keeps within the 'clichéd' colours of rap music. I will remember this when creating my contents, and will probably stick with the minimalistic shades for this page. The contents is also cropped behind the main image of the celebrity, which I want to try and incorporate into my own magazine. This adds professionalism and is seen in most hip hop magazines.

The background fades from a black to white/ beige which also fits with what the model is wearing in the main image. The background capitulates with the front cover and theme colours. The background also makes the readers eyes focus on the celebrity because she is placed in the lighter area. For my contents page, I think I will use a fading tool so my page goes from dark to light. This is really effective because instead of just picking one color that fits in the hop hop genre, it includes them all. Black and white is normally associated with rap music because artists tend to write about social problems, such as racism. They are very plain colours, therefore allows musicians to express themselves in different ways, for example, adding gold jewelry, or a red bandana etc.

The model is hip hop star 'Ciara', who was also featured on the front cover. Therefore, this suggests she is the main selling point of this magazine, and adds consistency throughout. Hip hop fans and 'Ciara' fans would probably buy this due to her being represented. The models clothing is very similar to the house theme, which shows consistency again and professionalism on every page. 'Ciara' hasn't got a lot of clothing on, just a beige bodysuit and nude belt. This is to suggest there is more to come from her on her double page spread. On the front cover, it suggested there was more to be revealed from her, and here on the contents she has given more information by the position she is in and what she has on. There is more to view for her devoted fans. On my own magazine, I would like to include celebrity endorsement, that will also attract fans of theirs. Her facial expressions connote mystery, which is what I hope to deliver when taking my own images and presenting them.

The contents list is very simple, with little use of sub-headings. This is to keep the magazine straight forward and easy to navigate around. The same font is used for both sub- headings, however they are bolder than the other text, therefore stand out. The use of the lines, helps partition all of the different articles and information, making it easier for the readers to view, and precisely select what they want to read first. The highlighted text also indicates celebrities that are included in the issue, again this will attract specific target audiences. For example, an ongoing 'Vibe' buyer may not be interested in hip hop star 'Ciara', but may enjoy reading about 'Robin Thicke' or 'Pretty Ricky'. I think I will highlight key words on my own contents page, so viewers can quickly see what they will enjoy reading.

The page also includes what the model is wearing and who photographed the image. I'm unsure on whether to include this on my own magazine, as it is normally included on fashion/ arty magazines, and isn't normally seen within the music industry.

The date and page number is located at the bottom right of this page, I will include these conventions in my own magazine because it makes the magazine follow a specific house theme that looks professional. I want my magazine to be as realistic as possible.

'XXL' Magazine

The masthead is located along a bar, underneath the title of the page. Even though it is not placed at the top left of the page, I think it is really effective in the fact it is easily found, and the reader knows straight away what contents page this belongs too. The logo is exactly the same which adds consistency throughout each page. If I don't place my masthead at the top left on my own magazine page, I will make sure it is effective as this.

The title of this page is not 'Contents', unlike other magazines but 'The A- Side'. The effect of using a different title for the contents page is to engage with the 'XXL' readers, and make them feel connected. By allowing them to feel involved, makes them think they are up to date with the latest news and trends, which is what most hip hop fans want. The rounded font used is really modern, connoting the viewers who read the magazine are current and stylish. By using the red and black, signifies rap music, and the danger and depth in the music. It also looks as if its from a newspaper, as the texture is different. It keeps with the house theme, which is important when creating a magazine. For my own contents, I know I need to keep a running colour scheme. Furthermore, unlike normal text, the title does not include capitals, this symbolizes that they don't follow normal procedures, and are outside the box.

The model is famous rapper 'Chris Brown', and takes up a large proportion of the page, this instantly draws attention to him and what he is wearing. It also suggests that he is the main selling point of this issue. Mise- en-scene has carefully been thought out here. Chris is wearing brown timberlands, beige trousers, a blue/ black hoodie, leather jacket and bandana. By wearing largely known brands that are on the expensive side, portrays a role model, and many people will look up to him and want to buy what he has on or be him because they like his style and sets trends. The position he is in suggests he is looking up to God, or other rap legends, with his fists closed, connotes that he wants to be seen as a legendary rapper so bad. The model also has tattoos, which fits in with the rap industry. Many artists get tattoos to pride themselves with achievements or things they have overcome. I will try and find a model for my magazine that has tattoos, depending on the gender I choose.

A pull quote has been used next to the main image, this indicates that the text is connected to 'Chris Brown' and by reading this, attracts viewers to go and read the full article. By using the language 'double edged sword' connotes that some rappers are in danger due to what they put out there, slating other musicians, or the dangerous positions they were put in when growing up. Viewers might see this language and again promote them to read the full article. I might use this convention on my contents page, if I have some space to fill up.

The date of the issue is underneath the title, consequently it is simple for readers to see what magazine they are on, and know if they have missed one out. I will include this convention on my own contents page.

There is only one sub-heading on this page which is 'Features'. It is situated underneath the title, therefore it is easily seen. Many people read from top to bottom, left- right, therefore the sub- heading would be the next thing you read. The white colour contrasts well from the black, and it makes it stand out even more with the red brackets placed around it. On my contents page, I will include sub- headings so my viewers can access certain parts quickly, and this will also add to the professionalism of my magazine.

The contents text isn't in your face which is good because the readers focus on other things that the page offers. The magazine article titles are bold, and so are the artists that the articles are about. This makes it easy for readers to see what they want to read and who they are interested in. I want to include this convention on my contents page, however I don't want it to look unprofessional, so I will try it on my prelimenary task and see what that looks like first.

On the bottom of the page, there is a black bar (following with the house theme) which includes who shot the image, I didn't think this was commonly seen in music magazines, but I'm considering including it on my own.

The background is plain white, however seems to have some sort of texture like paper. I think this is really effective, and might use this idea for my own magazine. Since the rap genre is new and trendy, this sort of material/ look is cool, and I would want to be setting new trends.

'Q' Magazine

The masthead on this contents page is again located underneath the title. It isn't too large which would make the page look cluttered. The magazine has used the same house theme by continuing with the same font and colour. This adds consistency page by page, and makes the magazine professional. Like I've stated before, I will stick to a specific house style when designing my own, to make it more realistic.

The title of the page, 'Contents', is situated on the top left of the first page. This sticks with the normal layout of a contents page, and keeps it simplistic. The font and colour is also minimalistic, keeping with the genre I've chosen to base my magazine on. When creating my own, I need to decide whether I'm going to have a simple or 'WOW' contents title.

The date is situated next to the masthead, this is very easy for readers to view, since most of the World's population read top- bottom, left- right. I will include the date on my contents page, and place it near the top left, I feel as though this is common in most professional magazines, which is how I want mine to be percieved.

This contents is based over two pages, which allows a lot of images and information to be shown. I won't be doing this for my own magazine, however I do think it is effective for this magazine.

Images have been used very differently compared to the two other contents pages I have deconstructed. Some have white thick borders around, some have been photoshopped out of their background, and some are unedited. The use of different effects has enabled the contents page to look like no other, this could connote that they are unlike anyone else, and the news and information they include is different to every other music magazine on the market at the moment. Another thing that is different, is there is not one main image to focus on, this also allows viewers to pick their favourite artist that they see and go and read the article about them. This then creates a larger audience for the magazine, as they involve more artists. They have images of 'Rihanna', which is aimed at hip hop fans, 'David Bowie' for the indie fans, and 'Bring Me the Horizon' for the alternative metal fans. This contents page is manly image- led, with not as much text, I need to decide for my own magazine, if i want it created that way or not. Nonetheless, I don't think image- led is how many hip hop magazines are set out.

On this contents page, there are many sub- headings, such as 'Regulars', 'Cover Story', and 'Features'. They all have different colour backgrounds, which matches with the background of the page number for each article. This makes it easy for the reader to know which article is under each sub- heading, and what they would be interested in reading. However, for my own magazine, I don't think I'll be using this many sub- headings due to it making it look over- crowded.

The text is designed in columns, and the article headlines is in red, this clearly sets them apart from the sub- text underneath, which is plain black. For my magazine, I think I will keep a similar colour scheme, as it adds regularity.

The background looks plain white, yet at a closer glance, it looks like it has some sort of texture. By using this, adds complexity to the page, instead of using plain white. This has been used in other music magazines, therefore I will consider it for my own.

Around the images and text on the second page, there is a page border, (although is behind the picture of 'Everything Everything'). I think this really adds to the professionalism of the magazine, and wish to use something like this on my own.

As well as the date and masthead being at the top of the page, it is placed on both pages next to the page number. This is to add consistency to each page, and I will use these conventions when designing my magazine.
