My practice has been significantly impacted by our Makers Cohort. I entered the cohort with the belief that children need to be active agents in their education and environment. I believed that we learn best through hands on, organic situations that are relevant to the learner's life. However, as I transitioned from Early Childhood Education into an Elementary school setting, I struggled to find a way to make room for this way of learning in my class. Making has given me more tools and a deeper understanding for how to incorporate this into a NYC DOE elementary classroom. I learned the importance of tools, how you introduce them, the skills you need and how to use them before you can delve into bigger projects. I was also reminded how we need to come to understand a material, it's characteristics or possibilities before we can expect children to create with them. This gave many of the children in my class an entry point as they had never used tools, such as scissors or tape, and materials, such as recycled items, to create.
Through the makers cohort, I have had the privilege of visiting other educators Maker's Spaces and hearing about their curriculum. Many of the things I saw or heard, I then brought back into my classroom. Collaborating with other professionals in the field has been instrumental in my ability to incorporate making into my own school and have the ability to support it through lesson plans, standards and curriculum overviews.
Through bringing making into my classroom, children have become more engaged and have more agency over their education. They have a sense or pride for their work and look forward to continuing their rigorous studies through making.
Having this cohort has provided me with the time and space needed to work alongside other teacher's in order to develop curriculum, reflect on my practice and seek out information about Making.

I came in really excited and motivated to do maker ed, and I found the cohort was source of inspiration and community.

My most successful makes were in the context of larger projects-- like a science lab or a play. I had students build backdrops and props for the 5/6 productions of hamlet/lion king and Romeo & Juliet/ West side story. i found it easier to facilitate and manage students within a structure.

I also did a film making elective with my students, and found that this was a good place for the students who wanted to stretch themselves creatively to do so. Others still needed more structure.

I am still inspired to use making and projects in my class, and I foudn this cohort was a good source of inspiration for open ended creative projects for my students.

Okay so read my comment first and then continue here.
There were many great teacher collaborations from students creating stop motion videos to build on their writing, learn about the American Revolution and how NYC has changed over time. Students also re wrote folktales to preform and shadow puppet show. Students also became problem solvers to make projects to show evidence of force and motion.
This year was also the first year working with other teacher in my district at a Maker lab-site lead. The was great because a small group of teacher took a deep dive into my practice and helped me think about how I could improve my practice. I have started have students use record sheets to records their goals each day, created charts of job/roles of students when working together.
This year has been a great year and I look forward to continuing this work next year with all of you!

This year I was eager to incorporate makey into my classroom. My most exciting project was with Amy and we aligned our writing unit in 1st grade with a stop-motion project.

Children were creating a small moment writing piece. Upon publishing their work we created covers using stop-motion to tell our stories.

The children got to share their shorts during our publishing party.

They excitement in and out of the classroom was priceless.
