Give your own definition of poetry.

To me, poetry is an art form and a form of expressing one's thoughts, beliefs, and faith in an artistic, descriptive manner. Poetry can act as an outlet for those who are normally silenced and finally be able to give their voices meaning.

2. List 3-5 things that make poetry different from other forms of writing or art.

• emphasize language musical qualities (rhyme, rhythm, meter)

• condensed language like literature with all the water rung out

• express intense feelings

• challenging simple definitions

• a way to remember stories

Toxic Masculinity is when a man feels the pressure to adhere to certain limitations and boundaries of what being a "man" can be.

2. Do you think it's a valid phrase? Do you think it's overused?

It is valid, but it is a bit overused. If a man wants to behave in the "traditional" sense, that shouldn't automatically equate to 'toxic masculinity'. It is the same as being a feminist. To like the color pink, cooking, and cleaning does not mean you are not a feminist.

3. Have you experienced toxic masculinity and if so what did that look like?

I've experienced it because of my brothers.

My reaction to this video is complete and utter shock and disgust. This video shows the normalcy of school shootings and mass violence amongst children, which just really surprises me. I've always known of school shootings, but seeing it presented like this has changed my entire perspective. I now realize I need to start express gratitude for my fortunate situation and take action against this monstrosity.

Do you personally relate or connect to the poem "Entertainment Industry"? Why or why not?

I don't have a personal connection, but I know people who were affected in school shootings.

According to my feedback, the next time I write a TEAEAL paragraph I have to make sure that I incorporate the first piece of evidence because I had forgotten to do so in my previous essay.

In order to improve my next oral commentary, I would like to ensure I do not repeat the same mistakes I made in my previous commentary. For instance, my organization was a bit confusing as I stated my thesis after presenting the poem. Instead, I should state my thesis right away to give insight to the readers what my stance is and how I personally approached the poem.

Bong Joon Ho is trying to communicate that people are either very rich or very poor in South Korea showing the huge class divides. Additionally, that the rich are dumber.

• What choices does he make to communicate those messages?

He uses the contrast in living conditions and personality to show this.

Parasite allows the observer to realize that there is not a clear distinction between good and evil. It is very difficult to fit something into one category, and one category alone. For instance, someone may be a good person, but commit a typically malicious act, but the film begs the question: Would this make them evil?"

An Native American "reservation" is a piece of land within the United States designated as federal territory and managed by a Native American tribal council

Tribes were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands and placed on undesirable lands throughout the 19th century. There are around 300 Native American Reservations overall, covering approximately 55 million acres total, or about 2.5% of the entire United States.

what is the legacy of the history of treaties between Native American tribes and the US Government? 

I like the second poster with all the panels that is very colorful. It's very eye-catching, mysterious and there's hidden elements among the poster that is interesting to discover.

My initial impression is that Native Americans have life very tough because it's like the world and society has limited and confined all Native American culture to life on the reservations which makes life outside their designated space very difficult.

Powwow (noun): a North American Native ceremony involving feasting, singing, and dancing.

Medicine person (noun): a person among Native American groups who is believed to possess supernatural powers that can heal illnesses and keep away evil spirits; a healer.

Powwowws are intertribal. Different tribes coming together to celebrate in one single event, bringing their regalia, songs, and dances. Urban Indians also rarely have a chance to be together as a community. But powwows are a chance of that.

This chapter alternates between the present day and flashbacks to when Dene was a child living with his mom.

Any scenes with his uncle are part of the flashback.

• Structure: This chapter takes place in 1970, when Opal is an 11 year old girl.

Flat: are fairly predictable and lack complexity. Often serve the purpose of moving the plot along.

Round: Are nuanced and complex, more like real people. They contribute to the plot and add to engagement.

STATIC vs DYNAMIC characters:

Static: Don't change much over the course. of the story.

Dynamic: Are defined by the change or evolution they undergo during the story.

The context of this quote is when Octavio walks into a meeting with Carlos, Calvin, and Charles. Octavio is really mad because he thinks they screwed him over so when he walked in he looked very upset.

A stylistic device apart of this is metaphor, comparing eyes to bullets.

Quote 2: "The spider's web is home and a trap" (101).

The context of this quote is when Jacquie is talking about spiders with her sister and then she remembers when her mother told her this quote. She then connects this quote to her life when she realizes that she is trapped when it comes to drinking. She thinks of drinking as home but it also as a trap creating a vicious cycle.

Symbol: An object, person, or idea that has a literal meaning in a story but suggests or represents other meanings.

1. What does Tommy Orange mean with this metaphor?

   
   

   The metaphor contrasts those who are insulated from history and struggle ("on the ship") versus those who are actively fighting for survival ("out at sea, swimming or drowning").

   
   

   2. Who is "on board the ship" and who is "out at sea?"

      
      

   Those "on board the ship" represent the privileged class who can choose to ignore history and live in comfort. Those "out at sea" represent the marginalized and disadvantaged who are struggling against systemic challenges.

   
   

   3. Explain the irony in the 'lazy' quote and the 'father' quote at the end.

      
      

   The irony is that the privileged class dismisses the struggles of the marginalized as laziness, rather than acknowledging the historical and systemic factors that have shaped their circumstances. The "father gave you this yacht" quote further highlights the irony, as it suggests the privileges of the yacht-owners are inherited, not earned.
