Prompts #1 - September 11th, 2023

What ideas, images, and words do you associate with feminism?

I associate women, usually women protestors, with feminism. I think of femininity, women working, women being active in their community, or excelling in a particular field.

What connotations does the word feminism have?

The connotation of the word feminism is that like with every word, it has a confined definition. By having a confined definition, it unfairly limits who can be a feminist. For example, as my first thought of a feminist was a very successful woman, this could convey to the women who do not reach the same success that they are not deserving of the feminist title.

Are you a feminist? Why or why not?

Yes, I am an ideal feminist because I believe women should have equal rights. However, as Gay said, I am a bad feminist as of right now because society chooses to focus on confining a rigid set of characteristics as the definition of a feminist.

I also had double periods which seemed long at first, but they got filled up pretty quickly. Everyone seemed moderately happy about coming back.

Positive:

The first day of school was absolutely amazing. It was so fun to see my friends that I missed so much over the summer! The classes were so interesting and the fact that they are even longer this year means even more time to learn! Yay!

Negative:

The first day of school was dreadful. I woke up to my deafeningly loud alarm with basically no sleep and it took a whole village to get me out of my cold bed. It was completely dark outside and the walk to my bathroom felt like a walk to my hanging. I was hungry, and upset, and classes seemed to be on pause for how long they were.

Why did you choose the specific essay that you did for your Bad Feminist presentation?

I chose to read "My First Year" by Roxane Gay because I've been a fan of her thought-provoking and eloquent writing for some time now. Her ability to dissect complex social and cultural issues resonates with me, and I wanted to delve deeper into her exploration of personal experiences and growth in the context of her first year of college. Additionally, as a student, I find her insights on education and identity particularly relevant, and I believed that reading this book would provide valuable perspectives and fuel my intellectual curiosity. Overall, my decision was driven by a combination of admiration for the author's work and a genuine interest in the book's themes.

I was nine years old. It was a typical day, until it was not. Every step of my routine was meticulously carried out throughout the day. Wake up, brush teeth, change, head to school, endure school, walk back, sleep and repeat. Things seemed to be on track for an average day for Harper Fraley. Until it was not. After the first couple of steps, it was time to walk home from school. In my bag, I had books, pencils, and chewing gum. I was wearing my grandmother's jewelry, who just recently died. Next thing I know, I feel a knife against my back. "Give me ur money u ho" . I cried.

x W

The red, massive target sign glares in my eyes. I get caught in the red hues swirling around another. My eyes fixate on the pure scarlett color and are unable to move. This red brings me happiness. This red brings me sadness. This red brings me confusion. I enter the store, it's almost like the breeze is different in there. The aroma of the christmas candles and the homey American atmosphere lures me in. Every step does not ever have a goal. Every list I once had goes to shame as I shameless grab that red cart and pack it away. Target is my sanctuary. Target is my home. The candles. The jewelry. The clothes. The makeup. Everything... was perfect. A never ending maze that you never want to end. A perfect grassy field you can roam on until the end of time. The convenience. The easiness. Everything was always so simple in target. Nothing was ever wrong. All my worries drifted into the next item I was going to buy. More. I needed more. I couldn't get enough. I needed it. I wanted it. It was all I ever wanted and desired. The crowdedness of the cart caught my eye. Motions of sadness washed over me. A single tear in the shape of the target logo drooped from my tear. I drag my feet across the cleanly, white floor behind the long line of other enthusiastic Targeters, as I call them. I slowly pay and scan each item, with each getting increasingly worried for my bank account but more importantly, increasingly upset that I will soon have to leave. Target unfortunately cannot be my home. I fight with myself, conflicted, stuck, unsure, as I leave the store. Others stare at me as If I am okay mentally, I am not. I leave out the door and return to the real world.

Daniel Gonzales, the baddest boy around. His nickname was "White Gun Carrier" because he carried a white gun. It was 3D printed, to avoid the feds. He liked bulldogs, he thought they were representative of him as dogs. He loved writing emails. Loved them. Obsessed with them actually. All day he would dream about writing emails. He wrote emails to his pit bull everyday. The second thing he loved most in this world, aside from emails, was money. Who doesn't love money though? Anyways, one day Daniel had a dream. He flew a drone into a shopping cart, knocked his pitbull into the cart, spilled his cash all over the ground while he was writing an email and accidentally shot someone with his white gun!
