Chinook winds are found in areas where prevailing winds meet mountain in parallel. These winds are usually in southern Alberta in Canada and northern Montana in the US. They are found in other parts of the world as well.

In this visual, it represents the cool, Rockies air into southern Alberta, causing the area to warm up quicker during colder times of the year.

Why do Chinook Winds Happen?

The winds that blow over the western slopes of the Rockies is warm air. When it reaches the leeward side the air expands, cools and loses moisture. Explained in more depth is:
The rising air will cool due to the moist adiabatic rate and creates clouds which will create precipitation on the windward side. As the air rolls down the mountain (at a very speedy rate) the air will compress and warm up moving those clouds from the windward side over to the leeward and create clouds that sweep the sky and temperatures that melt all the snow.
