Francis James was 20 years old when he played the role of the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces for about a little more than a year. He started off his journey as he states in a letter to his mother, "Things are going from bad to worse in England. Talk about restrictions in Australia, they don't know what it is there. Here:- No soldier allowed in any public eating house or place of amusement after 10pm, only see eatables between the hours of 7am till 8am, 10am till 10.45am, 4.30 pm till 9pm. That's pretty rough isn't it." He promised his mother always answer of her letters as soon as he could since 6 months have already passed since he left. As New Years came along he sent his family a letter describing the trips he has taken to Fritiz where they head around midday to dig a cable for the artillery and then return around 2 a.m and beging to work as a party of 10 men go through a knee deep mud as they settle with Fritz's machine gun. "Yes the business has been pretty rough since April but have dodged the A330 shell and bullet so far." Mack sends out his last expressive letter to his mother as he states above it has got difficult for him but has been able to be ok, he also gives advice for his sibling to make sure he gets some pretty tough training before getting this job and also asks for some socks and gloves to stay warm.
