Troy doesn't want Cory to pursue this because he doesn't want him to waste his time because people don't respect black people yet. Cory didn't want to hear this news, especially from his dad because he doesn't just want to end working with someone he doesn't want to. In the poem “DREAM DEFERRED” there're many different lines that can connect with what Cory is feeling. The one I chose is, "Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun" (Hughes, 2). I choose this sentence because Cory's dreams of becoming a professional athlete were starting to get crushed by his father. Troy wants Cory to have a real job to take care of his family when he has one. So his dreams are getting crushed and they are just sitting there getting dried up like a raisin in the sun. After the argument, Troy and Rose are talking and Rose doesn't like what Troy said to Cory about Troy's decision on Cory's future. Troy says to Rose,  "I don’t want him to be like me! I want him to move as far away from my life as he can get." I picked this for Cory because when he talks with Troy it feels like Troy doesn't even like him let alone love him. Troy doesn't show emotion for Cory and doesn't want him to be anything like him so when he's talking to him he doesn't want Cory to make the same mistakes he did. Cory doesn't care as much about making mistakes, but he just is looking for approval from his dad. He gets upset and frustrated at his dad because of how little love he shows Cory. Troy doesn't show these emotions because he said, "It’s my job. It’s my responsibility" (Wilson, 53). Troy says to Cory that he's not doing all of this a working a job and taking care of his family because he likes to do it. He does it because it's his job and his responsibility to do so. This was the first song that I thought of when thinking about Cory's character. These lyrics relate to what Cory is going through and I thought of a personal reason that I thought of this song. The personal reason was that Cory went into the Marines and my brother is finishing up a boot camp for the Marines and he loved this song a lot. The lyrics, "Life is old there, older than the trees" have to do with what I think that Cory is thinking about when he is returning for Troy's funeral. He is thinking about it as his old life and how when he looks back it seems like ages ago, but at the same time, it seems like yesterday. His old life before he became, "A corporal in the United States Marines" he did this because he saw the poster of a window and looked very interested in it and ended up joining them after he and Troy got into an argument. Other lyrics that reminded me of Cory was, "I hear her voice in the mornin' hour, she calls me" this reminds me of his relationship with Rose. It was a healthy mother and son relationship and it felt that Cory could count on Rose for everything.
