question

My question is why did Mimis class be so quick to alienate her. For example when she went to her first class on page 35 Michael asks "where did you come from" and Mimi responds by saying California but Michael is still confused even after Mimi explains that California is near San Francisco. and on the same page a boy called Carl asks "what nationality are you" and when Mimi responds by saying American he replies with "I mean... what are you." This shows that Mimis class and also basically her whole grade refuses to acknowledge that Mimi is a American. This makes me wonder why everyone in her school was so quick to exclude her just because she looks like she is a foreigner.

My question is: Will Mimi really become an astronaut? That is her dream but when she grows up, will she change her mind? For example, a person in my family wanted to become an airplane pilot, and that person became an architect. Will that happen to Mimi or will she follow and accomplish her dreams? In my group, the other day, we talked that by the time Mimi was an adult, they would already have discovered the moon and the technology would be hard to adapt to.
