For example when she went to her first class on page 35 Michael asks "where did you come from" and Mimi responds by saying California  but Michael is still confused even after Mimi explains that California is near San Francisco. and on the same page a boy called Carl asks "what nationality are you" and when Mimi responds by saying American he replies with "I mean... what are you." This shows that Mimis class and also basically her whole grade refuses to acknowledge that Mimi is a American.
