Well I'm not really sure how to do this Simon armitage h/w - I mean there is a seriously lack of any meaningful or noteworthy Biography - Wikipedia says the same as his website. All that I may conclude from reading what I can find on the internet is that perhaps Simon is a slightly troubled soul. For instance, look at his picture - for it shows to me that he feels that he may only speak through his pen (or had hired an oddball Photographer. As we can see his poems have a recurring dark theme - and it appears he also wrote a play about a real life murder which he set during a solar eclipse (sounds odd to me). Also he likes long walks and being a roving poet with no fixed address - perhaps he felt trapped as a child and likes to feel free on long walks. Anyway that was mostly a load of codswallop - my brain is aching most severly (SOMEBODY - although I shall not name names, gave me that cold again and I dragged myself out of my comfortable bed because I don't know when this homework is due)

Alfie Corroll

What influences from his life might we see in his work?

Armitage, or Professor Armitage, is a very interesting soul. He is a country boy. Before he was a poet, he did his MA on the effects of television violence on young offenders and worked as a Prohibition Officer, in Greater Manchester. I think Armitage is quite depressing, when he reads his poems he reads them like he is about to die of boredom, but I like him. 'The poems being carved into six stones at various sites along the South Pennine watershed between Marsden and Ilkley, now forming the 45 mile Stanza Stones Trail.

Today's one of those days when you feel very lazy, so here l will copy and paste a section of the Wikipedia article on Simon Armitage. Take my word for it, it is a very fabulous Wikipedia article...

Writing.

Armitage's poetry collections include Book of Matches(1993) and The Dead Sea Poems (1995). He has written two novels, Little Green Man (2001) and The White Stuff (2004), as well as All Points North (1998), a collection of essays on Northern England. He produced a dramatised version of Homer's Odyssey and a collection of poetry entitled Tyrannosaurus Rex Versus The Corduroy Kid (which was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize), both of which were published in July 2006. Many of Armitage's poems appear in the AQA (Assessment and Qualifications Alliance)GCSE syllabus for English Literature in the United Kingdom. These include "Homecoming", "November", "Kid", "Hitcher", and a selection of poems from Book of Matches, most notably of these "Mother any distance...". His writing is characterised by a dry Yorkshire wit combined with "an accessible, realist style and critical seriousness."[2] His translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (2007), was adopted for the ninth edition of The Norton Anthology of English Literature, and he was the narrator of a 2010 BBC documentary about the poem and its use of landscape.[4]

Armitage also writes for radio, television, film and stage.

Well, after some consideration, I think Simon Armitage is unreasonably gloomy; my justification being: he's a Yorkshire boy and since my whole family is from there.... I know that they are an extremely jolly bunch up there. Can't go anywhere without someone saying 'Good Morning', there's no strangers there, everyone knows everyone. So, I don't think he should be THAT gloomy. But, as previously mentioned, he did get himself into quite a depressive place, being a probation officer and all. He probably witnessed many people's lives deteriorate into nothing more often than he saw any hope. That's probably why he takes life with a drop of lemon juice rather than sugar. He seems drained a little but extremely wise to the ways of the world.

And plus, if he always walks in awful weather then he has to be a little damp in the soul.

Imogen Rogers

Simon Armitage was born in Yorkshire, and included a lot of Yorkshire history in his poems and he said that walking around the moors gave him ‘great thinking time’ so the Yorkshire moors must be quite big as he’s written over 5000 poems as well as books and TV shows etc His first collection of poems was based on his time working as a probation office after his father so I can’t imagine these would be the cheeriest of poems likewise he was also a member of the band the scaremongers the dictionary definition being ‘a person who spreads frightening or ominous reports or rumors’. So he may like to keep his poetry closely linked to his past in the band buy writing depressive poems? Although he was also a choir boy and his family were involved with plays and performances in the local church and maybe he became quite depressive because his voice broke?

( Plus when typing into Google ‘Simon Armitage sad’ there were 31,300 more results than typing in ‘Simon
armitage happy’ so if he balanced out the search result a bit more by smiling etc then his poems might
be a bit more cheery- but would they be as good?)

Firstly, I clicked on his biography and see he has a collection of poems under the name Xanadu. That's my old horses name so already I like this man. 'Ivor Gurney has always struck me as the most spontaneous of the war poets; not as confident as Sassoon or as accomplished as Owen, but alert and curious, with an unexpected turn of phrase and an eye for the comradeship of war as well as its horror. In fact, there is some evidence to suggest that Gurney felt less tortured and crazed in the trenches than he did as a civilian, particularly in later life when his mind and nerves went to pieces, leading to long periods of hospitalisation. From that confinement, some of his more paranoid poems took the form of long rambling to letters to the police; in my own piece, I picture him escaping from the war in his head to a pacific and spiritual destination in the far distance, where he might find peace and rest.' I like how he talks about being inspired by a war poet not so well known as the others. This quote shows his him in a really positive way because its almost like he wants the soldiers to find heaven or possibly paradise. I like him.
