However, the truth was finally revealed thanks to the help of an old king and a boy who herded geese with the princess. The evil maid was executed in a horrible way, while the kind-hearted princess married the prince and lived happily ever after.

A princess is sent to marry a prince in a distant kingdom. Her mother gives her a magical handkerchief with three drops of her blood for protection. Along the journey, her maid forces the princess to switch places and takes the handkerchief. The princess, now disguised as a maid, is made to tend geese.


At the new castle, the false princess is welcomed as royalty while the true princess works as a goose girl. She befriends her talking horse, Falada, whose head is later killed and mounted by the false princess to keep it from revealing the truth.


The real princess's unusual behavior catches the attention of Conrad, the goose herder, who informs the king. After being observed and questioned by the king, the princess reveals her true identity. The king exposes the false princess by asking her to decide the punishment for a deceitful servant. She unknowingly describes her own fate and is punished accordingly.


The true princess is restored to her rightful place and marries the prince, living happily ever after.
