Cyclone Ita’s overall damages cost $1.1 billion dollars, to be spent on fixing everything. This includes structural damages, agriculture industry damages and the sugarcane and banana plantations. Cyclone Ita caused floods too, stripping people of food and shelter. Many people were left with damaged houses and no food or water. With supermarkets either shut and or flooded, people needed assistance. Cyclone Ita certainly left a huge amount of damage in her wake, leaving houses and businesses damaged or flooded, power outages and few people with minor injuries, but fortunately no deaths. Around 8500 homes and businesses had no power, more than 1000 people were in cyclone shelters, the highest wind speed recorded was 250 km/h, 60+ rescues were made by SES and around 100 flights were cancelled. Many people cancelled their holiday/trip to Queensland whilst the cyclone was happening meaning plane trips, hotel bookings, sightseeing and tours would have been cancelled and refunded, leaving these places with less money to try and clean up their business. The great barrier reef suffered a great lot due to Cyclone Ita. As you can see in these before and after pictures, Cyclone Ita left a clear path of destruction through the Great Barrier Reef. At other times the reef was destroyed, fishing and pollution was stopping the Reef recover however now fishing has been banned, it is helping the Great Barrier Reef recuperate. Along with the great barrier reef the Cod Hole sustained a few light injuries from Cyclone Ita. A few of the weaker corals broke however experts say they are confident it will regrow as it is part of the natural reef cycle.

She initially began in the Solomon Sea, slowly moved Westward, gaining cyclone strength. Tropical Cyclones form with a combination of things. A very warm sea surface (26.5 degrees celsius or above), the correct type of outflow and or a group of already existing storms create the perfect conditions for a cyclone to form. Cyclones usually form a short distance away from the equator as they use the circulation of the Earth to help their system rotate. The warm, moist air rises which causes an area of lower pressure below. More air from surrounding areas with higher air pressure pushes to the low air pressure area and then becomes warm and moist and rises too. Because the warm air is rising the surrounding air spins and swirls in to take its place. The warm moist air rises and cools off as the water in the air form clouds. Cyclone Ita was a category 4 and 5 cyclone and was one of the biggest cyclones to hit since cyclone Yasi (3 years before). It hit the coast near Cooktown Queensland (2000 km North of Brisbane). There is a ministers department called Queensland Community recovery which provides community recovery grants (money), immediate hardship assistance, essential services hardship grants (e.g no water supply, power outage), structural assistance grants and more. These help citizens with personal and other emergencies. (other as in public damage). When Cyclone Ita happened many people needed this help and now Queensland is fully restored with the help of the Queensland Community Recovery Ministry. The red cross foundation also helped with the cleanup of cyclone Ita. Their disaster relief and recovery system really helped.
