He is trying to persuade himself to leave his ordinary life as a shepherd to pursue his personal legend. 

By using the quote, Coelho delivers to his readers the message that the key to everyday living depends on one's ability to seek differences and to grasp positive omens in life. Omens are signs that lead people to their personal legend, and so the inability to recognize omens, like the merchant daughter, separates people from their gateway to personal legend. In The Alchemist, Coelho inserts this quote as a life lesson that Santiago has developed while being a traveling shepherd. He refuses to develop intimate relationships with most of the newcomers he meets. He thinks that the closer you are to others, the more influence they have on you. The idea of becoming what others want you to be violates the central message of personal legend and hence goes against Santiago's own interpretation of life. It prohibits the development and maintenance of individual differences.

We don't know how we should live, but we can see ourselves in others. So we subconsciously compare our own shadow with the self itself. In this comparison, we also need to be satisfied, maybe angry, and all kinds of emotions. I think when we have such emotions, it is because of "our own shadow", and what we have in others may not be what we have, and we feel confused. So we will at some point point point fingers at others, to pretend to be successful, or to cover up our own failures.
But I think we can actually reduce this behavior, without having to pretend to succeed and cover up our failures. Reading and watching brings you knowledge, but not how to practically use them. Only when knowledge is put into practice can we truly appreciate its value.

In The Alchemist, Coelho uses the Englishman as an example to highlight the importance of practice. The Englishman reads a lot, and knows a lot information that's written in the book. However, when he meets the Alchemist, the only lesson he gets is to put his knowledge to use, meaning that he is still at the entry level of understanding the actually message delivered in the books he read.
