I would have my students read the requirements for submission for this award. There was a Telenovela playing the background while Little Red is talking to her mother. Catholic religion, which is the common religion amongst Hispanic culture, is shown in the grandma's home.

Instead of having them draw the circle of their life I would like to possibly do a circle of life on a plant. If I would do this with younger grades, I could do the circle of life of butterflies. Getting larvas and providing my students with ability to watch them grow and change would be a beneficial way to learn about the circle of life.

Throughout the entire book there was several circles. At first can be mistaken by scribbles but they are just symbolic for what the book is talking about.

I would personally use this book in the classroom to teach my students about some of the hispanic traditions. As part of the lesson I would have my students do a show and tell about their family or cultural traditions. This creates a sense of appreciation for one another and a safe place for everyone.
Illustrations:
The Illustrations were painted for this book. All images were lively and were able to identify the traditions authentically. My favorite image was the one about the Day of the Dead because it has more detail in my perspective.

Selected Purpose:
Often times students are taught only American history. Their reading lack from diversity and hispanic students do not normally see themselves in non-fiction stories. This book can broaden their perspective of all my students in showing them that not all heroes are white. I would also tie a project into this. Making my student research a non-caucasian heroes and present it in class.
Illustrations:
Many of the Illustrations were done by water colors and color pencils. All are self portraits of all the heroes incorporated in the book. Exposing hispanic students to people that look like them in the classroom is beneficial for them to see themselves in the classroom.

Another lesson that this book can be used to show the issues that language barriers can cause. This is a good Segway into showing empathy and trying to help those who might speak a different language from us.

The Illustrations show how someone can bridge the gaps between language barriers. There is an illustration of the several post-it notes around the house labeling several objects In English.
