Stage 1: Trust v.s. Mistrust

At this first stage, the child is between birth and 12-18 months. At their best, the child learns to trust the world and feel safe because that is what they received from their caregiver(s). They learn to judge the world based off of their caregiver(s), so it is important for the child to feel safe with those around them at this stage. At their worst, the child will not trust the world because they did not feel safe with their caregiver(s). My parents told me that when I was a child, I was a very happy baby, because I trusted them.

At this stage, the child is between 12-18 months and 3 years. They are finding out who they are and developing a stronger sense of "self", independence, and self-control. The children begin to replace their caregivers' conceptions and ideas with their own. At this age, I was known as the "bug kid" - my parents would tell me not to dirty myself outside and I went out regardless to play with bugs.

Children are 3 to 6 years old in this stage. They begin to balance initiative to pursue their desires without much hesitation and regret. At this stage, they begin to want to do more and more and are learning that some actions require the approval of others while some do not. At this age, I learned to ask children to play outside rather than just joining in - I took the initiative.

At this stage, children are in between 6 years and puberty-age. They must learn the quality of production and work based on their culture and apply it, or they will feel incompetent, likely from low self-esteem or lack of praise. As they reach this age, their cultures tend to relay ideals on them and social media plays an effect on them. At this age, I learned to work hard in school and get good grades so that my family and teachers would be proud of me.

Individuals in this age are between puberty and young adulthood. They are trying to figure out who they are, determined by their values, goals, and beliefs. They ask themselves, "Who am I?". At this age, the individuals want to be valued in society and explore themselves based on this desire. They sometimes are confused on their roles. A lot of times, social media plays a negative role in their lives in terms of comparison and determining their ideas of self. The resolution is determining who they are and what they stand for in society. When I was this age, I greatly struggled and could not figure out who I was - I just wanted to fit in with others and for them to like and accept me.

At this stage, adults are in their young ages. They decide to either commit to other people or accept loneliness and self-absorption. People who have a stronger sense of self begin to develop intimate relationships as they see around them. However, if they are afraid of losing themselves or their freedoms and/or have trust issues, they may prefer isolation, enhancing low self-esteem and anxiety/depression. I believe I am in this age or am reaching the end of it - I chose to be in a committed relationship with my boyfriend to contribute to the greater good; it makes me feel apart of something bigger than myself to greater help other people. We are a team.

At this stage, adults are in the middle of adulthood. They are focused on establishing and raising the next generation or they feel personally impoverished. At this stage, adults are re-examining their lives to see if they are proceeding as planned and develop a strong sense of care. I believe at this stage I will feel very fulfilled and a great sense of satisfaction to raise Christ-led children with great morals.

Adults are elderly and in their late adulthood at this stage. The individual must accept the life they lived in order to accept death, or they will be in crisis when they realize they cannot extend or relive their life. This is because individuals at this age are starting to near death and be physically near death - they are growing old and friends and family are passing away. I believe at this stage I will be excited to graduate to the next stage of death to be with Jesus, but it will be strange and overwhelming to leave because I don't know what it's like.
