The First and Second Estates locked the Third Estate out of their own meeting room. The Third Estate then broke into a Tennis Court. They told everyone they wont leave the Tennis court until a new constitution was made. Over time, Nobles wanted change as well, so they ended up joining the Third Estate. As King Louis saw these events occurring, he responded. He stationed a mercenary army of Swiss guards around Versailles.http://cdn.history.com/sites/2/2015/07/GettyImages-148274935.jpg

King Louis did not deal with his countries emergencies until he had no money left. His solution was imposing taxes on the nobility. Before he was able to do that, the second estate stopped it. They forced him to call a meeting with all three estates to approve of this tax. It was the first meeting in 175 years. https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.timetoast.com/public/uploads/photos/8839475/louis-xvi--estates-general-granger_1_.jpg?1474404505

Rumors of nobles hiring outlaws to terrorize Peasants. A huge wave of panic arose. The Peasants then turned themselves into outlaws. Arming themselves with pitchforks and other weapons. Peasants then broke into noble houses and destroyed the papers that made them bound to pay taxes. Sometimes houses were actually burned. The women's march is when a large group of women rioted over the growing prices of bread. The women then broke into the palace looking for the King and Queen. After killing numbers of guards they demanded the King and Queen to move to Paris. http://www.historywiz.com/images/frenchrevolution/womensmarch1.jpg

Some of the Kings advisors told Louis that him and his family were in danger. Supporters of the King left France to protect themselves. The King and Queen then tried to escape to Austria. Reason for Austria is because the Queens brother was the Monarch in Austria. Although on the way there, they were caught and returned to Paris. Louis escape only fueled the fire and gave all the citizen another reason to take his head. https://frenchrevolutiontimelinesd.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/flight-to-varennes.jpg

They were able to create laws and approve or reject declarations of war. Although the King was still a monarch. So he still held a good amount of power.

Robespierre became the leader of the Committee of Public Safety. He took over the government. He was supposed to be the voice of the people but he was becoming more and more like a dictator. His rule was known as the "Reign of Terror". More and more executions were held during his reign. With Robespierre in command, more and more of these "enemies" became a problem. These people meant no threat to anyone although they were killed because the new dictator thought otherwise. Robespierre saw a connection between virtue and terror. He stated that his use of terror allowed the citizens to stay true to their ideals. http://www.inquiriesjournal.com/article-images/uid-3262-1450339362/d1d6b4.jpg

Members of the National convention began to turn on Robespierre. People demanded his execution. His reign of terror finally ended when he was silenced at the guillotine. After his death, a new plan of government went into play. It was called The Directory. It placed the power in the hands of the upper middle class. It also called for two house legislature and an executive body of five men. Over time, France found their general to command its armies, Napoleon Bonaparte. http://historylists.org/images/rise-of-napoleon.jpg
