Their deaths affect the whole kingdom, especially Anna and Elsa. This situation can be compared to stories of Chinese mothers and American daughters written by Amy Tan. In the novel The Joy Luck Club, the author shows that the loss of a loved one has lifelong consequences on their family when June loses her mother, Rose loses Bing, and Ying Ying loses her unborn child.

In the novel Jane Eyre, Jane exclaims, “I am a free human being with an independent will” (Brontë 252). She had just learned of her fiancé’s previous attachment to another woman and spoke her mind when he tried to convince her to remain with him. In a time period where women were seen as inferior to men, Jane was courageously speaking words that were shocking to hear. Similarly, many of the women in Amy Tan’s novel stood up for themselves, even when the people surrounding them did not approve of such actions. In The Joy Luck Club, the author shows the importance of independence when she writes three of the major characters, Waverly, Jing Mei, and Rose, to display rebellious natures against their family in order to achieve what they think is best for themselves.

In the English language, the word “loss” can be defined in many ways. This word can be used to define anything from death and destruction to the misplacement of inanimate things. The type of loss that leaves the most negative impact is defined as a feeling or a state of being of grief of being deprived of someone or something of great value to oneself. This definition of loss is portrayed in the novel, The Joy Luck Club. The author of this novel, Amy Tan, portrays through her characters: An-Mei Hsu, Ying-Ying St. Clair, and Waverly Jong, that loss negatively impacts aspects of one’s life.

There she finds some friends who she grows up with, but because of her circumstances, they steal to get the money they need to survive. The trauma Cruella endures from this experience creates who she eventually becomes a person. Like some characters in The Joy Luck Club, the death of Cruella’s mother had a lasting and obstructive impact on her, turning her into a criminal. In Amy Tan’s novel, the negative and long-lasting impact of the trauma from losing a family member is shown through Ying-ying losing her son, Rose losing her brother, and An-mei losing her mother.

In literature, the loss of a child is shown to bring a mother through the stages of grief. Consequently, a mother suffers through the realization of her loss through deep, dark mental stages as a result of the overwhelming shock and tragedy that takes over. Through text, the audience is able to see tragedy as a twist, the change in not only the text but in the character resulting in the loss. In the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, Ying-Ying, An-mei, and Suyuan all experience the loss of a child; this is shown through their pain of grief, denial, and belief they endure.

Miguel experiences anguish when his great-grandmother, whom he cherishes, passes away from old age. Miguel’s experience of grief from losing someone special to him is similar to the sorrow that some of the mothers and daughters experience in Amy Tan’s novel The Joy Luck Club. Many of the mothers and a few of the daughters in the undergo pain from losing someone they loved and cherished. Hercules’s sacrifice is what allowed him to experience his love for Meg on a deeper, more genuine level. The element of sacrifice that is shown in Hercules can also be found in between mother-daughter relationships in the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. In Tan’s work, An-mei's and Suyuan's stories show that sacrifice is the only way to offer genuine love, while Lena and Harold's story show that lack of sacrifice diminishes love between them.

In an interview conducted by The Arizona Republic, Maya Angelou claims, “If you don't know where you've come from, you don't know where you're going.” Angelou suggests, maybe in contrary to one’s personal beliefs, that we cannot focus on the future until we have acknowledged the past. If only this lesson could be taught to Wavery Jong, An-mei Hsu, and Jing-mei Woo, who constantly battle their mothers while relentlessly striving to develop and deepen their relationships without an understanding of their cultural heritage.

In the novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Evelyn Hugo reflects on her many marriages saying, “Some marriages aren’t really that great. Some loves aren’t all-encompassing. Sometimes you separate because you weren’t that good together to begin with. Sometimes divorce isn’t an earth-shattering loss. Sometimes it’s just two people waking up out of a fog.” In this book Reid takes the reader on a journey through love and loss with an overarching theme surrounding the ideas of love, marriage, and confidence and how those ideas interact. The main character Evelyn Hugo shows again and again throughout the novel that a main source of her self-love and independence is her many marriages, especially those without the vital piece that is love. This idea can be applied to all marriages. In the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan the stories of Lindo, Lena, and Rose show that marriages with a lack of love foster a sense of self-love and independence.

In the Netflix TV series, Stranger Things, by Matt and Ross Duffer, the character Hopper sacrifices his life to save his loved ones. Hopper and Joyce had to close the Mothergate, or portal, to the Upside Down, an alternate dimensions home to many monsters, to save the world from being taken over from the mind flayer, a monster from the Upside Down (Duffer Brothers, writers. Stranger Things. 2016, Netflix, www.netflix.com.).

Louisa May Alcott once said through her literary character, Jo March “I don't believe I shall ever marry; I'm happy as I am and love my liberty too well to be in any hurry to give it up for any mortal man” (Chapter 35, do not have page number yet). At this place in the novel, Jo is finally finding and becoming who she wants to be as a woman in the early nineteenth century. This communicates to an audience the importance of women’s independence and strength in times where gender equality was not prominent. Much like Jo in Little Women who creates her own path by refusing the man she was expected to marry, Rose Hsu Jordan and Lena St. Clair both had the choice to end their marriages. In the novel The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, the importance of honor and obedience of women living in traditional China is compared to the modern beliefs and abilities of women in America today through Lindo's, Lena's, and Rose's experiences.

The queen believes Merida should listen to her parents and live a life similar to her own, but Merida wants to go on adventures and live by her own rules. This difference in wants and expectations puts a strain on their relationship. A similar struggle is displayed between the mothers and daughters in The Joy Luck Club. Without it, it dies” (Andersen & Gasbarre, 2022). Gaskins explains in this quote that communication is a necessity to achieving healthy relationships. This theme can be applied to many different types of relationships, whether it is a relationship between siblings, spouses, or in The Joy Luck Club, mother-daughter.
