Does technology makes us more alone?

Technology has been a part of our lives. We can easily connect to other people by just texting or messaging them. In Sherry Turkle's TED talk Connected, but Alone?, she talked about how she feels about technology and what she thinks it does to us as individuals communicating with each other.

Turkle said that we are allowing the little devices to control us, that they are so powerful and they can change who we are. Mobile phones, tablets or any of those devices are controlling our lives. I know I have to always have my phone beside me. I can’t deny it, sometimes I also sleep with my phone beside, and I can’t leave the house without my phone. When we are at family gatherings, most of the time and most of the members of the family are on their phones. Family gatherings are for family time and not for screen time.

Technology makes us more connected to many people but why do we still feel alone? Sometimes we don’t want to interact when we have visitors in our house but we enjoy chatting with friends online. We still feel alone because we really don’t feel the real connections. Even if you have thousands of friends on Facebook, at the end of the day, the one whom you can talk to and bond to is the one who would make you feel not alone. It is not bad to have phones or use technology but let us try not to consume all our time by using our phones scrolling on Facebook timeline. Let us consume it by communicating face-to-face with the people we love. Technology bring us closer to the people who are far from us but don’t let it take away the people who sit in front of us.
