1. Artwork and Artifacts of Native Americans

This is a website that has primary sources, many are pieces of artwork and artifacts. Through cultural narratives, the students would be expected to learn about the particular ethnic group the narrative comes from. I will be looking at 2 folktales in depth for the lesson, one from Native Americans. This site would allow students to learn more about their culture and way of life directly from their lifestyle and their time. https://www.docsteach.org/documents/documents?filter_searchterm=%22native+american%22&filterEras=&filterDocTypes=6&filter_order=&filter_order_Dir=&rt=NmrSQ94Mauvv&reset=1

This lesson goes into great depth about what culture is, how to define it to students, and how to teach about it. I think this would be really important to go over to give students a clear picture of what exactly is being looked at. I like the examples of readings it gives, these could also be looked at to further student understanding.
http://civics.sites.unc.edu/files/2012/05/SlaveCulture2.pdf

I think this would be one of the most engaging parts of the lesson/unit for students. The site gives a lot of examples of games played and gives students an opportunity to learn about different cultures through games. For example, the types of resources available to make the games in each area possible.
http://theirworld.org/news/games-that-school-children-play-around-the-world

Music can be such a fun way for students to learn about ethnic groups. By reading about it, or actually listening to it or getting to watch performances. Performances on video could also be primary sources. I chose this site because the songs chosen focus on the cultural groups and their diversity. This would allow students to not only learn about cultures, but learn about what makes them so unique.
http://www.songsforteaching.com/diversitymulticulturalism.htm

This site gives a really clear depiction of the differences between legends and folktales, two types of cultural narratives that can be easily mixed up by elementary students. It goes into the depths of both and also what makes them similar and different. This is important to cover before the lesson to ensure students realize and understand the difference.
http://www.differencebetween.com/difference-between-folktale-and-vs-legend/

Myths are another example of something easily confused with folktales. This site goes over what defines myths and legends. This would be a great resource for teacher knowledge and could give ideas to go over in the lesson itself. It would also further student understanding of the differences between types of cultural narratives.
http://www.ancient-origins.net/myths-legends

(Can also be placed under Student Literature)
An essential piece of the lesson would be looking at two folktales and comparing and contrasting them to learn more about their cultures. I am listing both folktales as secondary sources because since folktales are orally passed down for years and years, there is a good chance this site's version is not the exact original. This folktale can be read aloud by students to involve them more and can be compared to another ethnic groups' version of a folktale about day and night.
https://www.worldoftales.com/South_American_folktales/South_American_Folktale_5.html

(Can also be placed under Student Literature)
This would be the second folktale looked at. Since the other types of cultural narratives have been introduced and discussed, these two pieces would be the "bulk" of the lesson. It is another story about how day and night impacted an ethnic group. It gives ample chances to compare and contrast to the other folktale. Comparing and contrasting two folktales about the same concept, from different ethnic groups opens such an engaging and interesting discussion for students. While also teaching them about the cultures themselves.
http://www.powersource.com/cocinc/articles/cedar.htm

This can further their knowledge of how story telling in South American cultures came to be. They can reflect on what they know from the reading of the Brazilian folktale.
https://nochedecuentos.org/storytelling/

Another reason I chose it is because it references different aspects of Native American story telling. For example, Cherokee traditions and Tuscarora history. It can give students more context into the culture and about the origin of cultural narratives.
https://www.ncpedia.org/culture/stories/american-indian
