In the story Gatsby tells us that Daisy was the one actually driving the car when the accident had happened. Gatsby says, ""Was Daisy driving?"
"Yes," he said after a moment, "but of course I'll say I was. You see, when we left New York she was very nervous and she thought it would steady her to drive—and this woman rushed out at us just as we were passing a car coming the other way. It all happened in a minute but it seemed to me that she wanted to speak to us, thought we were somebody she knew. Well, first Daisy turned away from the woman toward the other car, and then she lost her nerve and turned back. The second my hand reached the wheel I felt the shock—it must have killed her instantly."" (Fitzgerald 397). This tells us that it is not actually Gatsby driving the car and it was Daisy. He’s shown it in the past as well, such as when he collected everything he has of her and kept it. But now Gatsby is going to extreme measures to take the blame for the killing, just so that Daisy doesn’t go to jail. I think this also shows that Gatsby is still going to fight for Daisy’s love even though she chose Tom.

(Fitzgerald, 367-368). Nick had told everyone this because he was shocked to find out that Tom was crying over Myrtle's death. This shows that Tom had genuine feelings for her and that he cared about her. This quote helps to show that Tom does have a soft spot for some people and Myrtle was one of them. Despite how he’s acting during this, I still won’t ignore his previous abusive behavior.
