(30 pts) Extra Credit {Post Here} Due Thursday by Prof. S

For this extra credit, commit an act of LEGAL deviance -- yes, I want you break a norm. Your action must be 100% legal (no crime allowed). It must be done in public and be out of the norm for you. Again, I can't stress this enough: DO NOT BREAK THE LAW.

Below, post a video or photo of your activity, and in 2 paragraphs describe your deviance. Describe what norm you broke (folkway or more?), what sanctions you received, and if this norm changes by time or place. Then document the social pressure (or lack there of) or emotional experience you felt to conform to or defy this norm.

It is a societal norm for women to sit down with their thighs clenched together, even when wearing pants. This is especially in public and especially when wearing a short skirt. The actual pic, shows my son's face and my panties in clear view. As you can see we are on a train in NYC. When I took this picture, I felt so embarrassed that i quickly shut my legs after a few snaps but it was incredibly comfortable because the muscles in my legs were at ease.

Regarding sanctions, my boyfriend (he took the picture) and I got a few dirty looks from women mostly, especially older women. Men tried their best to ignore what was going on. I'm not sure where it is socially acceptable for a woman to spread her legs in public but I assume perhaps in work locations where they are forced to squat at work (street marketplaces abroad) or perhaps even the gym.

TIFFANY CHIN

Let me tell you guys I got a few compliments and a few weird looks. I went to a few places first location was walmart thats where I got all the strange stares from random strangers, then I went to a urban club down town I received so many compliments.

After going to two different places I realized how each environment gave me different feed back. Purple hair to society I would say is act of deviance only because people choose to label it that way. All in all it felt pretty great!

Jessica Giraldo

Acne

Acne is a very normal and common, but a lot of people, especially females, hide it. With social media, we edit our pictures and use filters to hide imperfections. Especially with snapchat and instagram filters, it's easy to look flawless. This morning I posted tons of videos on snapchat without a filter. I do have acne, and it is getting better but sometimes I feel very self-conscious. I know tons of girls who have acne and they pile makeup on their faces to cover it all up. I stopped wearing makeup regularly two months ago. I now only wear it for parties etc. The less I put on my face, the clearer it's getting. In our society, it's such a big deal for girls to look presentable and "perfect'' all the time. But that's not normal. No one is perfect and no one is flawless. Acne is temporary. It will go away, it's an internal hormonal problem most of the time. And it does not make you unattractive. Just like Alicia Keys goes makeup free to make a statement and for herself, I posted videos without any filters or extra lighting to make a statement as well. My family members messaged me asking why my acne is breaking out. And in our culture, people think it's okay to point out your "flaws." Especially in the South Asian community, people will be very honest about what they think of your face and body. Being true to yourself and being happy with who you are on the inside will make you feel so much better on the outside. The less you stress about how you look, the happier you will look once you accept that no one is perfect.

No Bra? No Way!

Wearing a bra has been a widely accepted and almost forced norm in society, especially for Americans. Not wearing a bra at home may be okay, but in public it is seen as an act of deviance. So much so, that when a woman is not wearing one, it is seen as permiscuous, and unprofessional. On the other hand, if a man wears a bra and conforms to societies views on women, he is seen as creepy due to a fetish, or as a costume. The double standards on bras is what makes not wearing one as a woman an act of defiant behavior. Bras are also seen as a tool for feminism, another act of deviance in society, by the phrase "burning the bra" and using it as a symbol in women's rights. I decided to not wear a bra to Gatorland. Not only did I not wear one, I made sure to show my shoulders as well to further activate my deviance. I felt mildly uncomfortable because I, as well as most people, are used to the unwritten standards that society holds. However, it was also a freeing experience. I did notice some strange looks, but luckily nobody said anything except for my friends I was with who thought it was funny but also intriguing. Overall the experience was interesting and I think it is a good lesson to see how society is or is not changing with women's equality. (sorry for the photo quality, the image cannot be further downsized on my device)

Seating and eating on the floor !

Melissa Guerrero : The padlet won't let me upload a video of my social experiment. I took a screenshot of the front of the video.

For my social deviance work, I decided to seat down on the floor to eat my lunch instead of seating on the little couches or chair, I did this in the middle of the lunch break area, my coworkers started to look at me very weird when they saw seating down on the floor.

I got this lady that I've never seen before seating there telling me that she likes to eat on the floor too or do you need water ? Like I needed some help and she started to talk about her own experience of herself eating outside, I guess to say that she also does it too and people also thinks she's crazy because outside it's hot, however it wasn't the same social construct.
This other co-worker is asking me if the floor is more comfortable for me, so I started to ask more questions about why do they think it's bad or weird? I guess since they work with me even though they don't really know me they weren't probably quite honest about their real thoughts about what they think of a person eating on the floor. People that was just passing by were wondering what was going on because all the girls were turned around to look at me. To conclude, in America eating seating on the floor is not really common like in Japan for example, eating seated on the floor is part of their culture and it's not look down upon, in America it almost look like you are a weirdo or almost a savage. The sanctions are really weird looks, nervous laughter, questions of what are you doing, people feeling uncomfortable around you, small whispers around.

Children are so simple I don’t think parents realize that we are the reasons our children are the way they are. Whether negative or positive. I have seen my peers spend 40 dollars on one outfit for their child and I think that is a complete waste of money. Our children grow faster than you can say boo, so I personally see no point. I make sure that my children look clean and match always and that’s all that matters in my eyes.

Today I let my children dress themselves. As we walked to school I could feel others staring at the kids trying to understand why I let them leave the house as they were. As we walked into the school the teachers asked why they were dressed so crazy. I advised them that I am doing an assignment for school and I allowed my children to dress themselves. They had a lot of fun doing it. And honesty I had a great laugh while doing it.

This will be interesting for me and everyone in the coming week. However, if I keep this habit long in my life and outside of society is not suitable for me. Because I do not like this and it only suits women. Also, each person will think that I am sick or crazy. I think that nail polish for men only fit my personal style for a limited time. Because nail polish is only for women.

-Rachel Foss
I committed a legal act of deviance by being a female and joining the Marine Corps. Still to the day I hear many men and women say "women shouldn't be in the military, it is a mans job." Even my dad had this mentality until I joined the Marine Corps. I joined the Marine Corps after only attending 2 semesters of junior college. I come from a small town that is now over ran with drugs and low poverty. I had an eye opening experience after doing a group psychology experience my first semester. I was partying and struggling while I was in school, so I went to consult with my dad's best friend. He told me, "Rachel, don't ever let anyone tell that you aren't good enough or that you are limited to what you can do in life. Reach for the stars and keep going." So I did. I decided to leave the town that I called home and traded my party weekends for discipline and structure. I tell my story because still to this day my co workers don't understand why I want to leave the comfort of my own home and play a small roll in keeping our country safe. I simply tell them "somebody has to do it and I don't want it to be any of my family members, so I choose to go." I may be a woman, but I am living proof that you can do anything you put your mind to. Therefore, my legal act of deviance is every day that I wake up and put my uniform on and head to work. P.S. this was my boyfriend and I at the Orlando Marine Corps ball 2016!

When a women doesn't have their legs or armpits shaved society automatically thinks that they are gross and have bad hygiene. This is not true. Honestly shaving is a lot of work so I sometimes just don't shave my legs. I will go out in public like that and not care what others think.
It is just hair. Not shaving does not mean that someone has bad hygiene. I hope that one day women not shaving becomes normalized. It's not fair that men not shaving is accepted by society but women not shaving is not accepted.

It is not very usual for women to have short hair, even less pixie cuts. Many times, when a women has a pixie cut people assume she's a lesbian. As well as if a guy has long hair, people say he is dirty and doesn't have hygene.
In the schools and some jobs I've been, it is prohibited for girls to have pixie cuts and for guys to have long hair. I feel like that rule is so discriminative. If a girl like and feel comfortable with short hair or a pixie cut, why can't she have it? If a guy wants long hair and keeps it clean and in good conditions, he can have it too.
Personally, I've never cut my hair shorter than shoulder length. I like having long hair because I like do dye it and do creative things which are easier with long hair. But my grandma has always had short hair, she doesn't like having long hair because she gets too hot. I remember once, in a store she worked someone told her that she should let her hair grow because she looked like a man. I was so mad, who says short hair is for guys? And who says long hair is only for girls? Its your body and I believe you make the choices of what you do with it and how you want to modify it.

At first I was a little skeptical about going into a store without shoes. Like this is not something normal to do and we all know that for society is common sense to wear shoes at a store. I did not received any sanctions other than judgmental looks from some and a nasty person complaining. I have to be honest I felt embarrassed doing it and kinda like if I was committing a crime.

Well, I walked through a few aisles, and sure enough I got some "looks" from other customers shopping at Walgreens. One of the customers did noticed that I was being video taped and asked me to erase the video because he didn't want to be video taped for whatever reason I was doing it. I think he got mad because he mentioned something about kids these days not respecting. Any ways, I noticed how I was being judged by others because I was not wearing my shoes in a public place. Some may have think that I was a homeless or crazy lady because they tried avoiding me while I was walking.
