THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL NURSE
-In 2004, the latest re-authorization for IDEA, an important addition occurred adding School Nurses to the list of related services. Congress recognized the importance of having a qualified nurse or person, to provide nursing care.

Children ages 3 to 21 years of qualify for services.

The IEP is based on peer-reviewed research, using Evidence Based Practice for guidelines. School nurse's base their plan of care on this research.

The School Nurse develops Individualized Healthcare Plans which provide management for disabilities, addressing any type of issue the student may need to facilitate their learning environment.

Nursing Role in the IEP

Collaborates with MDT to develop a personalized plan of care for students with disabilities - Individualized Health Plan

Determines if there are any physical or mental concerns that may affect the child's learning capabilities-and expresses the need for services

The school nurse assists with the transition process for students 16 years and older going into the post secondary environment.
