There are two ways of assistance in this chapter. There is asking for assistance and offering assistance. Asking for assistance is hard for many people. People have an independent attitude and when someone asks if they need help, they are usually turned away. Many people think that they can do it by themselves, "The Self-Sufficiency Syndrome, as Collins calls it, is characterized by an inability and unwillingness to ask for help or delegate because of the belief that no one can do it as well as you can" (Asking For and Offering Assistance, 13). If people allow others to assist them, then the problem will have a greater solution. People need to step back and ask themselves why they are not asking for help. Many people want to make it perfect, "Ask yourself if you're doing it all because you're too perfectionistic" (Asking For and Offering Assistance, 14). Once people know that they are a perfectionist, they could then step back and look at asking for assistance as a strength. The other way is to offer assistance. There are many different ways to help. You can start out by helping your family, "Offer to do jobs or chores. When someone is busy or stressed chores and jobs often slip through the cracks. Find out from your family and friends what they're too busy or stressed to do for themselves and set aside some time to do the chore or job for them" (Asking For and Offering Assistance, 15). When you assist them you are relieving some of the stress that is put on them. Both of these ways of assisting people can not only help you but it can also help the person that you are assisting.

I am really shy and I do not talk a lot at school. But I started to struggle with the understanding of some things that we were learning in math. I am normally really good at math, so I wanted to try to figure it out by myself. I still couldn't figure it out so I asked my teacher. He was really nice and he answered all of the questions that I had. He walked me through the problems that I had trouble with, until I finally understood what we were doing. It was at a good time too, I had a test in just a couple of periods. I was nervous but I felt really good about it. I got home and checked my grades online and found that I got a 100% on the test. Now, when I do not understand something, I will go up and ask questions.
