Gatsby is so popular with readers of the book because of his mysterious aura that he surrounds himself with. He has few people he is close to and less people that actually know him. By putting up a wealthy, mysterious facade around him, Gatsby can make people believe or not believe whatever he says about himself. Throughout the whole book, rumors are getting thrown around, and no one knows which ones are true and which ones are fake. That is what keeps the readers flipping the page, trying to undo the web of lies around Jay, so they can finally know who he truly is.

Many are drawn to Gatsby for various reasons. Since the beginning of the book, Jay Gatsby is a man of mystery. He throws lavish parties, yet he himself is not one who is entertained by the people attending. In general, this is an excellent tactic to draw readers in because it keeps them wondering who he really is, why does he host glamorous parties, and how he acquired his wealth in the first place. Furthermore, it is later revealed that he became rich through organized crime. This aspect of Gatsby draws readers in by showing off his flawed side; ambition to a fault. However, it makes him more admirable in the sense that he not only was able to get away with it, but in the process he became a highly respected and successful man among society. Lastly, his main motivation for becoming rich and educated was for love, which appeals to readers who are romantics. It adds a distinct, yet intriguing persona that ultimately ties together to create a character beloved by nearly all. (Emma Gaddy)

Jay Gatsby is popular among readers due to the mystery surrounding him. Throughout the novel we slowly begin to learn more about Gatsby. However, we still never really understand his life or some of his motives. We are presented with a character who gives to the community and others without really understanding why. Gatsby is also very much human. We see throughout the book that he has his own desires, flaws, and ambitions. Yes we learn that a majority of things he did was for Daisy. Gatsby possesses an undying loyalty to Daisy and his close friends. A depressing fact that also adds to Gatsby's popularity, is that he has no true friends. We see that when Gatsby dies no one comes to his funeral. All of the people who benefited from him never paid their respects. Confronting an idea of loneliness or being forgotten, a fear that many other people have. It's my belief that the reason why Gatsby is so popular is because he meets a fate that everyone, to some extent fears. A lack of true human connection.

Jay Gatsby has a sense of mystery about him. Everybody has assumptions about him and what he’s done in the past (murdering a man) but he doesn’t tell anybody what is true and not. He is a mysterious man that just throws extravagant party, and nobody knows why. (I posted this twice, this one I logged in to write)

He is very wealthy and throws extravagent parties. He is also involved in a bootlegging buisness which is unusual and grabs your attention.
