My name is Sara Lee and I teach second grade. The strategy that most resonated with me from this chapter was learning about curriculum compacting. This jumped out at me because, as this book points out, a seat time requirement serves no one, least of all students who are learning at an accelerated pace. If anything, it teaches that underachievement is the way to go - just show up and breathe! This would be beyond frustrating to TAG student so by compacting the curriculum to cover what they can learn quickly, we are hurtling toward the point where they will struggle and what a joy that will be to discover! It’s at this point that the teacher can teach and the TAG student can learn. But, if the curriculum is not compacted and the topics are trudged through at an unalterable pace, the point where the TAG student may get to struggle may never be reached, resulting in boredom. I am excited to look over the new math and reading curriculums that we will be teaching next year and see my avenues of efficient curriculum compaction in anticipation of some little smarty pants coming my way!
