This infographic visually breaks down how memory is formed, retained, and transferred by highlighting sensory, short-term, and long term memory processes. It also explains how trauma can impact memory and offers practical strategies, like sensory rich learning, distributed practice, and mindfulness, to enhance cognitive functioning in educational settings.

Memory comprises sensory, short term, and long term components. Sensory memory briefly registers incoming stimuli, short term memory holds limited information for immediate use, and long term memory stores details for extended periods. When you learn something new, your brain codes the information and it strengthens neural pathways through processes such as long term potentiation (SAGE Publications, Inc., n.d.).

Retanting information is the process of storing information for future use, while transferring is the application of that stored information in new situations. Effective learning depends on both a person's retention and the ability to transfer knowledge to different situations, which enables you to build on previous learning and apply it practically (SAGE Publications, Inc., n.d.).

Trauma can disrupt normal memory formation by affecting the brain’s stressful responses. Elevated levels of stressed hormones may impair the hippocampus, resulting in less accessible memories. Understanding these effects is crucial for designing supportive learning environments for students who have experienced trauma (Harvard Health Publishing, n.d.).

Incorporating sensory rich learning approaches engages multiple senses, strengthening neural connections. Distributed practice, which spaces lessons over time with regular reviews, reinforces memory consolidation and aids in the transfer of learning. I use this in the classroom before big tests through prayer as well as much needed brain breaks such as silly transitional songs to have my students feel less stressed to focus on the next expected task. Additionally, integrating mindfulness and stress reduction techniques, such as brief mindfulness exercises, helps lower stress and enhance focus. This is particularly beneficial for learners affected by trauma, as it creates a calm and supportive learning environment (Harvard Health Publishing, n.d.; SAGE Publications, Inc., n.d.).
