During freshman year, self-advocacy should be a goal on the student’s transition plan. To actively participate in the planning process, students can:

• Increase their knowledge of their own disability and how it may affect their academic performance.

• Practice explaining their own strengths and challenges to others.

• Work with the transition team and a college guidance counselor to register for their courses and ensure they have the credits needed for their high school diploma.

• Prepare for and pass all end-of-course exams. (If a student receives a course substitution and/or waiver in high school, make sure there’s a clearly documented rationale that relates directly to the student’s disability.)

• Start a transition portfolio of disability documentation, letters of support, verification of test accommodations used on statewide assessments, copies of past IEPs, and school records. (These will be helpful when requesting accommodations in college.)

• Begin identifying adaptations and modifications they’re likely to use in college to support their learning.

• Be sure that at least one annual goal on the IEP addresses postsecondary or other vocational transition activities.

SOPHOMORE YEAR

Students should spend this year reinforcing and expanding the college prep work they started freshman year. They should continue actively participating in IEP planning, taking classes that get them ready for the rigors of college, and sharpening their basic academic skills. Sophomores can also:

• Conduct more research on colleges. Talk to guidance counselors, go to college fairs, and chat with college representatives who visit high schools.

• Review college disability documentation guidelines.

• Work with their parents to make sure that their disability documentation records are current, and request an update if not.

• Find out how to prepare disability documentation for college

• Identify and apply for high-stakes test accommodations.

• Prepare for and take the PSAT to gauge how prepared they are for the SAT.

• Acquire and expand on specific study skills, such as using the library, reading with auxiliary aids and assistive technologies, and writing a term paper.

• Develop fluency with assistive technologies they can use in college.

JUNIOR YEAR

During junior year, students should consolidate their college prep plans, expand their self-advocacy skills, and start to narrow their focus to specific colleges. They can:

• Consider possible career goals and college majors that support those goals.

• Identify a short list of potential colleges that are a good fit for their goals, interests, and abilities (and offer the necessary disability support services).

• Use college catalogs and websites to research information about admissions, prerequisites, tech requirements, housing, campus life, and disability services.

• If the website has a place to submit a question, send queries to admissions and disability services personnel in preparation for the campus visit.

• Plan campus tours, including a visit to the disability services office. Be prepared to talk to postsecondary disability service personnel about access to support services.

• Consider retaking high-stakes entrance exams, if necessary.

• Start working on college application essays (high school English teachers and guidance counselors can usually help students prepare for the essay-writing process).

• Request letters of recommendation from teachers and other individuals—from coaches and counselors to drama directors and employers.

SENIOR YEAR

Almost to the finish line! As they wrap up their high school experience, seniors should:

• Meet with the guidance counselor early in the year to review their transition portfolio and identify materials they’ll need for their college application.

• Talk to their guidance counselor about receiving a Summary of Performance to include in the transition portfolio.

• Continue to develop self-advocacy skills and study skills for college.

• If the target colleges require an admissions interview, practice before the interview by role-playing with the transition coordinator or guidance counselor.

• Go on final campus tours. Bring a list of questions about academics, disability services, and more—admissions procedures, financial aid, housing, social activities, athletics, etc.

• Review how to complete college application forms online.

• Fill out college applications (most colleges require applications to be filed by December of senior year).

• Ask the guidance counselor to review completed applications 2-3 weeks before the deadline.

• Wait for a letter of acceptance—letters will probably begin to arrive in mid-March.

• If multiple acceptance letters arrive, congratulations! Consider second campus visits or follow-up phone calls to ease the final decision.

• Write a short acceptance letter and mail it early along with any deposits and housing requests.

• CELEBRATE an awesome achievement!

Eligibility

To be considered eligible for the 2024 Hometown Pride Scholarship students must be a U.S. citizen currently attending an accredited college or university within the United States. The Coca-Cola Scholars Program scholarship is an achievement-based scholarship awarded to students in their final year of high school. Students are recognized for their capacity to lead and serve, as well as their commitment to making a significant impact on their schools and communities. With the 36th class in 2024, the Foundation has provided over 6,900 Coca-Cola Scholars with more than $84 million in educational support. 150 Coca-Cola Scholars are selected each year to receive this $20,000 scholarship.

For the 2025 Coca-Cola Scholars Program scholarship, applicants must be:

• Currently enrolled high school/home-schooled students attending school in one of the 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or select DoD schools who will graduate high school during the 2024-2025 academic school year (students graduating from an American or expat school abroad are not eligible for this award; individuals who have already graduated from high school are not eligible)

USSYP Selection Process – How to Qualify

Qualified high school junior or seniors must show demonstrated leadership by serving in elected or appointed positions in which they are actively representing or previously represented a constituency in organizations related to student government, education, public affairs and community service. They must be actively serving in qualified leadership positions, enrolled in high school and living in the state (and for these purposes the District of Columbia) that they will represent for the entire 2024 – 2025 academic year.  All student leadership positions are subject to the judgement and verification of the state selection administrators.

The DoDEA central administrative office will select the DoDEA delegates and alternates residing overseas. Military dependents who reside and attend schools in the U.S. shall apply for the program under the RESIDENCY ruling shown below.

Alternate delegates will be selected as replacements if a primary delegate is unable to participate in Washington Week. If the primary delegate is unable to attend, The Hearst Foundations must be notified in advance.  Attendance during the entire Washington Week program is required to receive the financial scholarship; the appropriate disposition of scholarship funds will be determined by the program director in the event a primary delegate is unable to attend the program due to emergency circumstances or is dismissed.

Selection will be based on the student’s outstanding abilities and demonstrated qualities of leadership in an elected or appointed high school student office for the entire 2024-2025 school year. The primary purposes of the qualifying leadership position must be representation of a constituency and service to others.  A student who graduates high school at the close of the Fall 2024 semester/quarter is not eligible to apply for the program, and students other than DoDEA delegates must be residing in one state of primary residence in the U.S. during the entire 2024-2025 academic year to participate.

Any high school junior or senior student is eligible for the program provided he or she has not previously been a delegate to Washington Week and has not received a USSYP scholarship.

RESIDENCY – Each student must be a legal permanent resident or citizen of the United States at the time of application.  Students who are not United States Citizens must be in possession of their I-551 / “green card” at the time of application to be eligible to apply. Students must be enrolled for the entire academic year in a public or independent high school located in the state (and for these purposes the District of Columbia) in which at least one of their parents or guardians currently resides. Home-educated students must be approved by their state department of education to apply.

1. The student must hold leadership positions for the current 2024-2025 academic year in any one of the following student government, civic or educational organizations during the entire 2024-2025 academic year. All student leadership positions are subject to the judgement and verification of the state selection administrators:

   • Student Body president, vice president, secretary or treasurer

   • Class president, vice president, secretary or treasurer

   • Student Council representative

   • A National Honor Society officer (including discipline-based Honor Societies such as the National English and Social Studies Honor Societies that include service components)

   • Student representative elected or appointed (appointed by a panel, commission or board) to a local, district, regional or state-level civic, service and/or educational organization approved by the state selection administrator, where the student holds a high-level position of representation to a constituency in a year-round capacity providing service to others.

2. Participation or holding an officer position in academic clubs and/or educational competition programs/conferences or organizations designed primarily for the student’s personal development and enrichment do not qualify a student for USSYP, although many students who qualify participate in these activities. The positions listed below DO NOT qualify the student for the program:

   • Attendance or officer position at Boys/Girls Nation or State summer conference

   • Member of the National Honor Society (serving as an elected officer for the organization for the entire school year is acceptable)

   • Member or leader of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts  or a sports team

   • A founder or chairperson of a self-created group

   • A participant, captain or officer in Mock Trial, Debate Team, Model U.N. or other academic club, mock legislature, conference or competition where the primary engagement is for the individual educational enrichment or benefit.

3. Exceptions to the residency requirement will only be made in the following cases:

   • Students from DoDEA overseas will represent the state(s) of which the parents/guardians are U.S. legal voting residents. Students attending DoD schools in the U.S. or students enrolled through U.S. military bases in local schools must be residing in the state in which their school is located for the entire academic year.

   • Students may reside in a state other than the state in which they attend school if they are enrolled in the only designated public high school available to them in a school district that crosses contiguous state borders through a legal interstate agreement. Students in these schools shall make applications to the program through the state where the high school is located and shall represent that state if selected.

  The U.S. Rhodes Scholarship application is available each year in early July.

  District receptions and interviews are now held annually on the second weekend of November (Friday and Saturday).  District Secretaries will notify candidates regarding interview status at differing intervals, but in all cases no later than two weeks prior to the interviews.  Election announcements are made at the conclusion of the Saturday interviews.

  The purpose of the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is to help ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. The GRFP provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated 
  their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education.  NSF actively encourages submission of applications from the full spectrum of diverse talent that society has to offer which includes underrepresented and underserved communities.

  NSF GRFP was established to recruit and support individuals who demonstrate the potential to make significant contributions in STEM. NSF especially encourages applications from undergraduate seniors and Bachelor's degree-holders interested in pursuing research-based graduate study in STEM.  First- and second-year graduate students in eligible STEM fields and degree programs are also encouraged to apply.

  Each Fellowship provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period. For each of the three years of support, NSF provides a $37,000 stipend and $16,000 Cost of Education allowance to the graduate degree-granting institution of higher education for each Fellow who uses the support in a fellowship year.  The Fellowship is portable and can be transferred to a different institution of higher education if a Fellow chooses to transfer to another institution after completion of the first Fellowship year.  While the Fellowship is offered to the individual, the Fellowship funds are awarded to the institution of higher education at which a Fellow is enrolled and the institution is responsible for disbursement of the stipend to the Fellow.

  • Have completed no more than one academic year (according to institution's academic calendar) while enrolled in a graduate degree program (non-degree coursework must be clearly identified in the transcript and does not count toward this limit)

  • Individuals holding joint Bachelor's-Master's degrees who did not apply while enrolled in the joint program, may apply as second-year graduate applicants if enrolled in an eligible doctoral program the beginning of the academic year immediately following the academic award year of the joint degree

  • Individuals with prior graduate enrollment who have: (i) completed more than one academic year in any graduate degree-granting program, (ii) earned a previous master's degree of any kind (see guidance for joint Bachelor's-Master's degree-holders above), or (iii) earned a professional degree must meet the following requirements:

    • not enrolled in a graduate degree program at application deadline

For nurses interested in pursuing further credentials to become nursing faculty, $10 million in tuition reimbursement was allocated to support the BOLD (Better Outcomes, Less Debt) Career Pathways Nursing Faculty Loan Program. Participating students must enroll in in regionally accredited, not-for-profit, South Carolina based, public and private institutions graduate-level Master of Science (MSN) programs, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Ph.D., or other like programs appropriate to prepare individuals for faculty roles and agree to assume a faculty role in a public nursing education program after graduation, for a minimum of two years for each year they receive financial support.

Although the initial year (2023-24) of the program was open to public institutions only, please note that as of the Fall 2024 semester, students in programs at the following independent institutions are now eligible to participate:

• Anderson University (MSN and DNP only)

• Charleston Southern University (MSN only)

• Claflin University (MSN only)

• Coker College (BSN to MSN Bridge Program)

• Limestone University (MSN only)
