I would thoroughly recommend this training to other schools or to include in part of an Authority Learning Festival.  It supports strategies for ASFL, the use of digital tools for ASFL, approaches for learning and teaching around EAL and most importantly, Equity for all!

Tips which staff could use in their daily practice were covered and which can easily be introduced to make a positive impact for EAL pupils.

As a school we also found the discussion around ESOL informative and very useful.

All of the above were delivered in a friendly, approachable manner.

Although the presentation was clearly structured, Rachael also ensured there was plenty of time for professional dialogue which enabled everyone present to share their own ideas for supporting EAL learners.

The session was the most impactful and relevant professional learning I have undertaken this year and the ideas I gained will have an impact on not only my EAL student, but all of my learners who find literacy challenging.

We have had a number of families with EAL over the years and it was interesting to hear about ways to support children when they arrive without any English and not feel guilty about them being in the classroom environment not fully understanding or engaged at the beginning since research has proven that this is the best way to learn.

I really liked the books that were shown to us that showed English and their own native language and it was refreshing to hear that we should encourage them to continue to write and speak in their native language and encourage their families to do so too.

The question and answer session at the end allowed staff to ask specific questions relating to their learners and this too, was very interesting.

It was great to be able to see how things can be adapted and simple strategies put in place to support EAL pupils.  It was also very interesting to be made aware of the importance of assessing the pupils in their own home language.

It was very valuable and helpful to all staff who attended and we really appreciate all the help and support that we have received so far. 

The training was offered so quickly which has allowed staff to look at the different resources that are available and where they can be located. 

It was also very reassuring to hear that some of the strategies that we have already put in place are strategies that would be recommended.
