Summary:
Currently up to page 500, Hazel finally used her powers to control the mist to save her and her friends from Sciron. The five make it to Epirus finally and are facing challenges. Annabeth and Percy have almost made it to the doors of death with their titan friend Iapetus, but they encounter a group of monsters they slaughtered above ground. Leo gets stuck on an island and he thinks he found his true love.

Character Chart:
Percy Jackson- Son of Poseidon, one of main characters. He is dating Annabeth. The connection between him and his father become stronger and stronger through out the story line.
Annabeth Chase-  Daughter of Athena, one of the main characters, dating Percy. She is basically the leader of the group. She is very smart and is always calm.
Hazel Levesque- Daughter of Pluto, one of the main characters, dating Frank. She can summon precious metal out of the ground and she has the ability to use magic or the mist.
Frank Zhang- Son of Mars, one of the main characters. He can also shape shift and when hes really mad he can take out a whole army by him self.
Piper McLean- Daughter of Aphrodite. Piper always feels useless but little does she know her charm speak does so much.
Coach Hedge- A satyr that watches over the seven. Hes basically the crazy uncle everyone has to deal with during thanks giving. But he has a good heart and will do anything for the seven.
Iapetus- He is a titan the Percy brain washed to be good, and he is helping Percy and Annabeth travel through tartarus.
Nico di Angelo- He is the son of pluto and he is the brother of Hazel.
Arion- Hazel's extremely fast horse.
Calypso- She is the daughter of the titan Atlas. She is stuck on an island for punishment and every hero that lands on the island she falls in love with then the hero leaves.
Gaea- Evil goddess of the earth.
Hecate- Goddess of magic.

Commentary:
A character that I think changed for the better is Hazel. She now knows she has the ability to control the mist, so she is not scared any more to use her powers. For example, she tricked Sciron into him being turned around completely which led to his death "When the kick came, she fle backward, but she didin't go far" (Riordan 333).

Themes:
One of the biggest theme I notice throughout the book is loyalty. Every character had the option to join the enemy side and become powerful, but they stuck with their friends and fought for each other. Each one of them look out for the other. Riordan illustrates these themes through the main seven characters who are currently on the quest. Another author who also has the loyalty theme is Suzanne Collins in her book the Hunger Games. When Catness and Peta were going to kill each other at the same time because they didn't want to see the other die.
