In the schools, allowing students to bring their own tablets or mobile phones it can overcome the problem of the lack of devices for all pupils. The school's facilities, rarely available 1: 1 (student: device), will be used by those students without their own devices. In this way the classes are transformed, even in the absence of sufficient funding, in environments for integrated teaching.

The use of cloud computing resources allows reducing costs, reduce the activation times and doesn't need to acquire expensive equipment or specialized skills.

There is still a difficulty to replace books with only tablets or white board. As I mentioned previously we use also BYOD but only with private and not school internet connection. I found the suggestion of creating a group pf students as digital leaders very interesting as it could help a lot in "developing student competence" and their awareness of a need of a responsible use not only of the net but also of all the resources and devices we have at disposal in our schools . When we do renew hardware we recycle what we have in-house - by putting open source software on the machines and placing them in the library or science labs. Whenever a classroom based laptop fails we can swap one of these machines in until funds become available to replace it.
Moving totally to open source software has ben great - though not a smooth transition with staff complaining but that settles down fast enough.
BYOD is an interesting idea and one we haven't adopted yet but will be looking into in the near future.
Printing ideas and tips were great! What are the ink friendly fonts??? anyone ?? We don't allow colour printing in my school, just plain black. This in itself cut down on printing costs. Students are encouraged to use cloud services for project work and presentations. We started two years ago replacing Windows computers with Chromebooks, the prices are competitive and you manage them from the admin panel in G-Suite, so less work. We have computers with Windows and MS Office and my idea, yet is not a school policy, is to migrate them to Linux and Open Office. Actually we don’t need Open Office been the school policy that for work we would have to use Google Docs, but is difficult to change some old habits, even with young people.

We are thinking about BYOD, however, being a VET school we need devices with keyboards, so, It’s not enough to have a smartphone. Right now we are doing a qualitative inventory of hardware and software in order to make decisions.

2 years ago we put Open Office instead of Microsoft Office. Teachers (who are not very technological) at home had Office and at school Open Office and did not know how to coexist with the 2 systems.

The same goes for the operating system. It is true that you would save money on windows licenses, using a free operating system. But teachers find it difficult to understand another different operating system. Some do not care and agree, but others see it as a problem

I would like to know if those who have changed to open source software have had those problems and how you have solved them.

We use BYOD, that's why we saved money on devices, but if not, I think it's interesting to study chromebooks.

I love the idea of students as Digital Leaders with some basic training: trouble about shooting printers, projectors, connectivity, use of the network and so on. In this way a big part of problems could be solved by the Digital Leaders and the lesson could be easily carried on.

After an incident, the Digital Leaders has to send a report to the ICT manager for future reference: this is helpful also for teachers in order to avoid wasting time sending a help message to all staff.

In our case, we have been reducing the number of printers spread around the school, using a centralized printer, with a control of use, and it saves a lot of money too.
A right use of Projector options like mute, can save a lot of time in projector lamps . Teachers now have three rented network printers. The rent includes toner and some quote of free copies per month. We do print on both sides and extend margins. Suggestion about choosing the right font to save ink was new to me, so thanks, I will transfer this information to other colleagues.
Teachers use Drive to store their documents and some teachers use Moodle interactive classrooms. Last year we also bought some refurbished computers.
