"Thinking it is ridiculous implies something else: it implies that music understood to be for dancing and comfort, music constructed to play on terrestrial top 40 radio stations, isn't worthy of being collected, kept, and thought of as a corpus. That can't be right." -Ratliff p112

Ratliff talks about different artist's inventory and how fans are able to listen to their favorite artist and explore this artist by collecting and listening to all of their recorded work. He talks about the Grateful Dead, and about some of their very dedicated followers, and how they have collections of all of their recorded pieces, all of their albums, b sides, and even all of their performances. Ratliff talks about how fans listen to all of the recordings of the same songs, listening to the difference in the way the band performs the song, and trying to decide the best performance of it. This is a way for fans to connect to the artist, and see how the artist changes and evolves over time. My friends and I listen to an artist called Frank Ocean, who is a man who is very hidden from the mainstream. He works hard to stay out of the lime light, so that the only way we can actually get to know him is through his music. Because of this and how good his music is, my friends have scoured the internet and stores to try and find every musical piece he has ever released, trying to find the best version, whether it be live or studio recorded. This helps us get to know this artist that we are so obsessed with and understand who he is, and how is art has changed and grown. Through this search we have grown closer to him then any other artist we have listened to, even if he is the most secluded.
