My process was working somewhat intuitively. I was thinking about the public sphere and who is considered “allowed” to use the space and how. I was thinking about how most urban centres choose capital gain over the well being of its people and communities. I walked through the Edmonton downtown core to capture sound from public spaces. My goal was to manipulate the sounds to give that idea of an unwelcome presence. With my image, I wanted to incorporate some sort of historical reference to establish a timeline to give the listen/viewer a chance to reflect of how things have or haven’t changed from then to now. The image I chose was a painting from a series of Renaissance paintings titled “the Ideal City”. These paintings were meant to portray a utopian urban space, hence the title. I appropriated the image and disrupted the code by opening the image as a text file and then manipulating the text until I distorted the image to my liking. For the sound piece, I worked with my surroundings, not really having a plan for sound. I knew I wanted to capture “sounds of the city” and more modern sounds like cars and buses, to juxtapose the image.
