The Confederates plan to win came from their position on the Union soldiers. After Union soldiers being delayed several days by the pontoon bridges, general Robert E. Lee was able to beat the Union army on its way to Richmond. They were able to position themselves well in Fredericksburg and as the Union Potomac Army was crossing the Rappahannock River, the Confederate army hit them with everything they had.

The Union Army was unprepared for this battle. After being delayed a long while by the bridges, they were beat by Robert E. Lees army before they could get to Richmond. They were intercepted in Fredericksburg and were fired upon. After that, their strategy was to fight as hard as possible and just put a dent in confederate troops. It ended up being a massacre on the Union, but it was a misleading battle which ultimately helped the Union.
