The Black Death started in Asia, it traveled to Europe by the silk road. The silk road was a very important trading route in medieval times. Genoese trading ships left Caffa and arrived in Sicily in 1347. When the Mongols arrived they were all either infected or dead by the black death they brought with them. The mongols decide to catapult the dead and infected bodies into Sicily. Which ended in the Black Death spreading around in Europe. The video below is a secondary source. It explains the origins of the Black Death.

The Black Death killed an estimated 100 Million people and with more than 20 Million people dying just in Europe. How did this many people die? Well there was three different types of plague, the Bubonic, Septicemic and Pneumonic plages.

In the middle ages people where very superstitious, they also didn't know why or how the Black Death was there because of this doctors didn't know how to prevent the Black Death from happening to people. Some people believed the plague was spread by poisoned air, miasma, so they would try to prevent themselves by burning aromatic herbs and wood. People would also close all doors in their houses and fill their houses with flowers, vinegar and rosewater to keep the miasma out.
An example of this is the Black Death doctors like in the secondary source below. It shows the long masks doctors wear with herbs in the tip so air wouldn't get in there nose or mouth.

The number of deaths during the plague was astonishing. The amount of deaths was so high that there was not enough consecrated ground to bury bodies. The consequence of this was that mass bodies were throw in rivers or placed in piled up pits in countries like France and England. Many bodies would also end up on streets. The below photo is a secondary source showing a mass burial with a large amount of dead people being piled on each other in a pit.

In medieval times there was a strong intolerance to the Jews. During the 14th century the church didn't accept Jews. The catholic church set up laws such as banning Jews to hire Christians for work, not allowing Jews to sell any goods to Christians and forbidding Jews to work many different jobs. The Jews were also forced to wear a badge so people would know if they were Jews. During the Black Death Jews were blamed of causing the plague even though they were dying as well.

The Black Death was very effective on the medieval world. The plague was contagious so it spread very fast because of this an astonishing amount of people died. The amount of deaths is not agreeable. The year 8 textbook says that 'some historians put the number of deaths as high as 100 million' and '20 million people had died in Europe.' http://www.historytoday.com/ole-j-benedictow/black-death-greatest-catastrophe-ever says that it 'killed 50 million people' and '60% of Europe's population.' www.historytoday.com say the Black Death killed 'more than 20 million people in Europe, almost one-third of the continents population.'

In the middle ages, the catholic church dominated medical treatment, This meaning all treatments for the Black Death where conducted according to the church. When you where sick the priest was more important than the doctor. Before treating patients doctors had to ask the infected person if they wanted to confess their sins. In hospitals there was not much treatment happening but when there was it wasn't very effective. Some treatments where bleeding, lancing the boils and covering people with a substance that would draw off the poison.
Blood letting is one of the treatments. Blood letting is when people would remove excess blood from the body by using leeches. The photo below is a secondary source, it shows a person cutting excess blood out of another persons arm.
