Florida would've been one of the 13 colonies but British rule only lasted 20 years<br>Florida was loyal to British though out the war for American Independence 1776-1783<br>1783 - Spain regained control of Florida as part of the Peace Treaty that ended American Revolution <br>Slavery was allowed to attract settlers<br>Huge fort in St. Augustine - prison camp<br>During the Treaty of Paris 1783 - Florida was not going to be part of U.S. because delegate for Florida had missed the ruling. The English in St. Augustine packed for England or British Caribbean.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>(1760's)<br>Native people from Georgia and Alabama (most members of the Creek peoples) moved into Florida. They were called the "Seminoles".<br><br>(1763) <br>At the end of the French and Indian war, in 1763, Britain, France, and Spain signed the Treaty of Paris. <br>The Treaty made France give up most of it's land in North America and in return Spain gave up Florida. <br><br>(1771)<br>Patrick Tonyn replaced an ill Grant as Governor. The American Revolution started. Florida didn't join the other 13 English colonies in the revolution and stayed loyal to England. It's low population grew overnight as Tories escaped into loyalist Florida (mostly settling in St. Augustine). <br><br>(1783)<br>The American Revolution was ended by the Treaty of Paris. The treaty allowed Spain to take back Florida. Most of the English settlers that were located in Florida left to England and the Bahamas. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Important Cities And Why They Were Important: <br><br>(St. Augustine And Pensacola)<br><br>The important cities during the British rule in Florida were St. Augustine and Pensacola. The reason why St. Augustine was important during this time period was because it was the capital of British East Florida during 1763 until it was relinquished to Spain in 1783. The reason why Pensacola was important during this time period was because it was the capital of British West Florida <br>from 1763 until 1781. <br><br>Important People And Why They Were Important: <br><br>(James Grant, John Forbes, And Patrick Tonyn)<br><br>James Grant was an important person during this time period because he was the Governor of British East Florida.<br><br>John Forbes of British West Florida was important person during this time period because he was a co-founder of a trading company called Panton, Leslie and Company. John Forbes was chosen to be the business manager. John Forbes is most commonly remembered for the Forbes Purchase, which was Florida's Largest Land Grant. <br><br>Patrick Tonyn was an important person during this time period because after James Grant become ill, Patrick Tonyn replaced him as the Governor of East <br>Florida. Patrick Tonyn was known for being harsh but conservative. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Royal colonies governed by an appointed governor with a lieutenant governor and a chief justice as a primary staff members. <br>The governor kept the staff at the minimum. A secretary an attorney general, a surveyor, a register of titles, a trade agency,  an Anglican clergyman, and two school teachers. <br>James Grant was the governor of East Florida. During this time, the Indians signed the Treaty of Fort Picolata. That treaty kept boundaries between them and the Indians. James Grant increased Florida's Population. East Florida granted 2,856,000 acres to West Florida's meager 380,000 acres. </div>]]></description>
