It usually happens when there are 3 chromosomes in spot 13 instead of 2.

Treatments would depend on the person and his/her symptoms, but most of them result in surgery and therapy. It is difficult to predict the life span of a baby with Trisomy 13, but most babies don't survive through their first year of birth, but only 13% of babies born with Patau Syndrome are alive when they are 10 years old.
