They sometimes could own land and sometimes couldn’t.
Some that owned land could vote others couldn’t.

I learned that 
1) free slaves were obviously, as it said in the “title” free. They had families, houses, and possessions of their own. 
2) in the North, they were treated just as anyone else. 
3) they had jobs, not that they were forced, but to earn a living and provide for themselves and their families. 
4) although they had freedom, they were discriminated by some.
