In lines 1-80 of Act 2 Scene 4, there are three key characters. They are Romeo, Mercutio and Benvolio and you see some of their characters revealed in this scene. Firstly, Mercutio comes across as a joker and immature because all throughout the scene he teases Romeo and makes jokes. For example, when Romeo first arrives, Mercutio mocks Romeo about loving Rosaline and writing love poems or “numbers” for her. He mentions “Petrarch”, “Laura”, “Dido”, “Cleopatra”, “Helen and Hero” and “Thisbe” who are characters in other love tales. Romeo is urged by Mercutio and starts making jokes himself, “Nay, good goose, bite not”, which ends up in a competition with him and Mercutio making rude jokes. This shows he can also be a joker but only when he is encouraged by his friends. However, Romeo and especially Mercutio have very contrasting characters to Benvolio. Benvolio, like Romeo and Mercutio, doesn’t join in with the joking and stays quiet until the jokes become very rude and he tells the others to “Stop there, stop there”. This shows he is quite mature and doesn’t join in with rude jokes.

In lines 1-80 of Act 2 Scene 4, Shakespeare focuses on three key themes, love, lust, and heartbreak. At the start of the scene, Mercutio and Benvolio talk of Romeo's love for Rosaline, and how that love is not reciprocated. Mercutio does not know about Romeo meeting Juliet, and assumes that Romeo is moping over his former lover. He even mentions to Benvolio about how 'Rosaline torments him so'. This is used by Shakespeare to highlight the agony of Heartbreak. Then, when Romeo finally arrives and appears to be happy (due to meeting Juliet), Mercutio starts making innuendos to wind up Romeo. He jokes about how his reference has 'worn out' Romeo's 'pump' and continues to fire responses back to his best friend. Shakespeare may have done this to show the rising excitment that love and lust can bring, how love has turned Romeo happy again.
