To give a more cohesive colour scheme, I added a gradient map on top. I like how the gradient map has segmented the shadows into flat shapes and how the windows frame the top of the page. I used imagery of a cane and a window to evoke ideas of being housebound with a chronic illness which explores the disability awareness movement to tie with the theme of Revolution!

I like the slight inconsistencies in the lines because of how the ink bled into the paper originally and how it adds a subtle hand-drawn quality. This is a quick way to digitise ink sketches and it might be a more efficient way to create line-art digitally in the future because I have more experience sketching traditionally.

The process was very quick for how much detail I got especially around the eyes and nose. I think the piece would be more visually interesting if the composition was more dynamic which could be achieved by showing more of the body or part of a background.

Because I am looking at how the revolution of the earth changes the lighting and atmosphere of a space, I wanted to research an artist that explores low light scenes to represent night. I wanted to make responses to this artist to practice the use of warm high contrast lighting and develop my skills creating detail in oil paint and digital art, mediums which I have less experience using.

I wanted to research her work because her films and photography looking at the movement of the sun tie with my concept of the revolution of the earth and the sun moving across the sky.

My responses will be inspired by her pieces using chalk and chalkboard paint to explore the contrast between light and shadow. Working on a chalkboard will help me develop my skills working with texture and tone and would allow me to work at large scale and experiment with how size can change the impact of an artwork.

I set my phone on a tripod and I’d leave it to record for several hours. The weather was unpredictable and I had very limited filming opportunities as I was relying heavily on the sun in late autumn so I found it quite a frustrating process. I cut the timelapses down into short gifs to remove cloudy sections and make them easier to use as reference.

I used this to make a 13 frame animation to visually show the revolution of the earth with the change in shape of the shadows. After I took a photo of each finished frame, I drew on and subtracted from the previous drawing. The final animation looks wobbly because I took my phone off the tripod I was using, which meant I struggled lining up the frames because they weren’t all at the same angle. In the future I won’t change the angle of my phone and I’ll mark the edges of the frame more precisely.

I like the texture and marks that came from smudging and smearing away the chalk as well as the very energetic scribbly line.

I like how the saturation of the orange contrasts the muted blue in the cast shadows. Because the piece doesn’t show a change in lighting, it doesn’t connect fully to my concept of Revolution but it was still helpful to practice colouring light and shadows.

I like how simplistic the line-work of the ear and nose is. In the future, I think it would be interesting to add a realistic colour scheme to this style to see how it would contrast with the large clean shapes and flat patterns.

I like how the oil paint blends with itself to add a softer look to the painting and I think the shadows look very natural. If I try this again, I would stylise how I paint the lighting to include more vibrant colours which would add more atmosphere to the piece.

I think the colour and saturation of the lighting is very effective and the hue variation across each element helps make lighting dynamic. In the future I want to push the use of fuzzy edges some of the objects to add a softness to the scene. The plants in the daytime scene look messy because of the amount of visual information which could be improved by using a larger brush to block in simpler, more intentional shapes.

Developing on from my paper structure photography, I twisted the latex over coloured lights to see how the opacity of it interacts with light. I like how it bends more fluidly and has a more organic texture than the paper. It has the effect of both a microscopic and monumental object.

To further abstract the images, I edited some of the photos I took by changing the saturation contrast and brightness. From doing this I learnt, how lowering the contrast of an image can draw more focus to the movement of a piece.

I added lettering of the word ‘HOME’ to the front to allude to the traditional flag meaning. I like the original idea I had for the lettering better as I think ‘HOME SWEET HOME’ has an almost sarcastic tone that better encapsulates the complex emotions that come with being disabled.

To add further context to the piece, I turned it into a bag by sewing on two larger rectangles and a long strip for the handle. This gives the object a purpose which opposes the meaning of disability being something that decreases your potential to do things.

I like the pattern on the shirt, I think it helps break up the cleaner shapes. From making this I learnt, how effective the lasso tool for quickly shading large areas. I don’t think this routine-based approach to revolution communicates the passage of time as well as I want it to. I want to focus around drawing environments going forward in the project.

I made the blanket from a scrap piece pf fabric. To add more detail to the character, I would paint a pattern onto the blanket or sew the doll more complex clothes. I like how the doll maintains the ability to be poses in different ways because of the wire. To improve this further, I could sculpt hands and feet to add more expressive posing options.
