Evidence #1 - Paint

We will be able to find remnants of the cats paint because the car was noted to have scraped against the side of the lamp post. We might just be able to find a paint smear but if the car hit the lamp post hard enough it could have left behind paint chips which are very valuable. Paint chips, when looked at under a high powered microscope can show us multiple layers. Using a pyrolysis gas chromatography we can distinguish between the paint from the car and the paint from the lamp post.

We will find the pieces of the car’s side mirror on the street outside of the law office. By collecting the glass, separating pieces between known and unknown and labeling each evidence, we can send the evidence back to the lab for analysis. The glass will first be examined by the naked eye, we will look for any trace evidence. The glass will be cleaned and it’s condition noted. We will look for stress marks and matches on the glass underneath the microscope. We can also measure the glasses refractive index, how light passes through the glass, this can help us determine matches.

Inside or outside of the building we may be able to identify char patterns. Because this fire started quickly char patterns can help us identify how and where the fire spread. If char patterns are present on the floor we will be able to identify if they were caused by accelerants and, if so, what accelerants.

Burn patterns inside of the building will help us determine where the fire started. By backtracking theses burn patterns we can follow the trail back to the origin of the fire. The shape of these burn patterns will also help us determine if this fire was aided with accelerants. Depending on where the burns are can indicated if there was anything in the way of the fire to prevent a burn being made.

Bullets were shot at the window of the law office. We will be able to examine the window and, if we can find them, bullet casings. There were several shots fired which means there are successive penetration marks on the window. We can determine which bullets hit first by examining the radial fractures and their terminating points. If we are able to find the bullet casings we can look at the striations made on them and trace it back to a type of gun.
