ED Institute Week 3 — Identifying ED Networks and Communities by

As identified by Donnell et al. (2018) in the pre-reading article, networks and communities come in many shapes and forms. In this Padlet, we invite you to share your recommendations, observations, and experiences in the relevant columns below. We will pick up the conversation in our synchronous session on Wednesday, May 25, 2022. Click the white circle "+" button on the bottom of each column to add your contributions. To post anonymously, remember to sign out of your Padlet account. If you are unable or choose not to use the Padlet, we still encourage your participation during the synchronous session either through speaking or by using the chat.

COED is launching a co-mentorship initiative on June 10th! Attending external events (like this one!) is allowing me to slowly build up a network of peers and colleagues who I can connect with on various topics. Informally, a colleague has continuously provided me with support since I started as an ED in a way that I recognize as good mentorship. She provides advice and guidance, but also pulls me into meetings with instructors and gives me space to listen, share, and grow. I'm trying to carry this forward :) [Today also felt like a good day to create a Padlet account and get my name on these things - can't build relationships if I'm anonymous!]

Having started remotely, it's hard to know what/where all the existing communities are and who I can collaborate with. A lot of our collaborations happen through people reaching out to our unit and then following-up with us after the initial contact. I also find it hard knowing how to reach out and build connections from scratch in meaningful and authentic ways. In the past, my best mentors were those who I met and connected with in organic ways, not in intentional seeking-out ways.

This isn't a barrier per se, but it's important to be a good mentor. Some people are brilliant and those you'd like to learn from, but they aren't necessarily good mentors. So I suppose it would be nice to see opportunities for people to learn skills/tools/strategies for being a good mentor. I think this is especially important for reaching out and supporting racialized/marginalized EDs.

For me, participating in workshop and training sessions is a great way to meet people with whom I can follow up and have conversations about specific areas of my work.

"Knowing what you need to know" has been a huge barrier for me. I was fortunate at my previous institution to have folks in the Centre who were very involved with a lot of the professional networks and would often invite members of our team to join different events/conferences/panels, etc. But without that I don't think I would know any of these resources (including this!) exist. As we have talked about in previous weeks, I "fell into" Ed Development and have spent the last couple of years just following the flow of the river of opportunity, but if I had been at a smaller institution or had not happened into a particular conference, I don't think I would even know where to look to find what I need to know...
